Why Did They Reject Jesus as King?

reject Jesus

Although thousands had gathered around Him joyously celebrating His entry into Jerusalem.  The crowds were overwhelming as they threw their coats along the path, symbolic of surrender to His rule as King.  At that moment they were certain, He was the Messiah who would free them from the Roman tyranny.  Certainly, He would set up His Kingdom.  However, it would be this same crowd that would reject Him and cry out for His crucifixion only a few short days later.  Why did they so quickly reject Jesus as King?

Shortly after His triumphal entry, Jesus goes to the temple where He drove out the merchants and money changers.  “And he taught, saying unto them, ‘Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves” (Mark 11).  In this He quoted, Isaiah 56:7 and the fulfillment of Jeremiah 7:11. “11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Lord.”

They Reject Jesus as King of Righteousness

They wanted a King who would come in to bless them, not to expose their own sin and corruption.  But had not Malachi foretold of this?

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts .But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. (Malachi 3:1-3.

Besides this, He continued to teach of His death being necessary before His Glory. He spoke of His rejection when He spoke of the stone which the builders refused.  His rejection being foretold by Psalm 118: 19-24 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord: This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter. I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

They Reject Jesus as the Passover Lamb

Looking only for blessings, they reject the truths laid out from all Old Testament Scripture that there must be a final atoning Passover Lamb.  Yet, in doing so, they further confirm the truth of Prophecy.  How ironic.  The crowds had dispersed earlier in Capernaum when He spoke of His being the bread they must eat and the wine they must drink.  Although, the crowds had regathered to worship Him upon His entrance to Jerusalem, once more they would reject Jesus as King.  He wasn’t the kind of King they wanted; but, He was the King they needed.

He must be both the Royal King and the High Priest.  The royal King who gave His life that all who believe in Him might be forgiven of their sins.  His was the blood shed that could wash away sin.  Then, rising again on the third day, triumphant over sin and death, He sits at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest making intercession for us.  As written long before, He was both the Davidic heir to the throne (Psalm 2:7) and a priest chosen by God to Father in the order of Melchisedek (not Levi)-Psalm 110:4.

So, the only question that remains is:  “What will you do with Jesus?”
