Mom and Me: Lessons From God in a Bipolar World

bipolar

This book is a frank and honest look at growing up and living life in a Bipolar world. Having spent a lifetime caring for and loving  both Mom and Pete, who suffered from bipolar disorder; I learned that often what I thought was my sacrifice in love was upside down.  Indeed, they taught me more of love than I could have ever learned otherwise.  What I at times saw as trials, God saw as wondrous opportunities to grow in His love.  A deep search of the heart can reveal that love can overcome and forgive a myriad of mistakes, even those we make. There can be healing, strength, and hope that overcomes every blemish. The bonds of love that bind us can be greater than the brokenness that would tear us apart. This is especially true when the  gentle hands of love which heal us are the very hands of God.  In His Sovereign Grace, God knew and chose the perfect path for Mom, Me, and Pete so that we might come to know Him and in Him find abiding, steadfast joy.

The Blind May See

Often illness or suffering is seen as God’s punishment for sin by those who would espouse their own righteousness.   A God of love would only bring abundant blessings to those who follow Him.  As His Beloved, Blessed, Redeemed Child, the Christian should experience prosperity, health, and a life abounding in the joys of this world.  Or so, some would say!  Yet, God works in mysterious ways that our human minds cannot comprehend.

What is a life that is truly blessed?  The one that is filled with all the counterfeit joys of this world? No, I dare say a thousand times no!  For the one who is truly blessed is the one covered with scars, broken, unable to stand alone and finds his/her strength by falling into the arms of Christ where he/she is carried to the finish line by Christ Alone.  Oh, that dear saint is the one truly blessed!  Having come to the very end of one’s self, one finds there a Savior who will carry him or her in His Loving Arms with an Unconditional Love and Grace that they know was wholly undeserved.  Thereby making that Grace even more precious than anything else this earth could offer and their joy more miraculous than can be imagined.

COLLAPSE

I Was A Child, Back Then

I was a child, back then

And did not, could not understand

The pains she faced, the fears within

Her road of life throughout this land

But as I grew I came to see

The sacrifices that she made

Because of love she had for me

No matter what it did not fade

Whatever road our feet did trod

Her courage, faith deep within

Did hold her heart so close to God

Protecting her from sin

The more I learned of God’s dear Grace

Throughout the years, I came to see

The trials, sorrows that we face

Transform our hearts that we might be

A shining beacon on a hill

To light the path in darkest night

That strangers then might find God’s will

The blinded might gain sight

Yet, each of us, God calls to be

A different beam of Glory’s light

And this in part the mystery

Of how God works, that He just might

Give one the gift to speak His word

Another sings His praise

While some it seems their voice unheard

Except by God. In prayer their voices raise

Each child who knows Christ as their Lord

God uses in His own sweet way

To each He gives a different sword

His Glory Honor to display

And so, I came to realize

The chains of pride that bound my heart

Were merely part of Satan’s guise

Sow bitter seeds, and then depart

I lay my “self” upon the cross

The cross where Jesus bled and died

That He might live, all else is loss

My pride He’s crucified

As I look back, I now can see

That it was Mom, God used to be

A beacon of humility

His beam of Grace to shine toward me

I did not, could not understand

The pains she faced, the fears within

Her road of life throughout this land

Because I was a child, back then
