Throughout our lives we search for opportunities. Whether that be in friendships, work, learning or entertainments, our eyes remain open. Wide open, we remain vigilant for opportunities we feel may enhance our lives. However, what is our greatest opportunity at hand dur this age in history? Is it that better job, a financial breakthrough? Perhaps it is a grand opportunity to become known and make a difference in world beyond our little circle? When the Holy Spirit came to those waiting for Him, He came with great display of power and might. The display so great all those who heard of it came to see for themselves. Among the crowds that came were skeptics, excitement seekers, and those whose curiosity lead them to wonder about the events. When Peter saw the crowds that came, he seized the opportunity to proclaim the name of Jesus to the crowd that had gathered.
He began his sermon by addressing the skeptics who declared they must all be drunk. Then, he proclaimed that this in part was a fulfillment of the Prophet Joel. Remember, the day of Pentecost was the feast of the First harvest that occurred 50 days after Passover. Therefore, within Jerusalem were Jewish travelers from many surrounding nations. They came from far and wide. Peter’s sermon consisted of pointing out the obvious as to how the outpouring of the Holy Spirit came as prophesied. Furthermore, he used this opportunity to declare the truth of Jesus death and resurrection. Jesus fulfilled the words of David regarding the Messiah. David foretold of His death and resurrection. Even proclaiming He now is seated on His throne at the right hand of the Father. “God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36).
Our Greatest Opportunity
For those who do not know Christ as Savior and Lord of their lives, the greatest opportunity you face today is this. “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38). In this, Peter is referring to the Spiritual Baptism of Jesus Christ. A baptism which comes only to those who with a humbled heart come to Him, believing He is the only begotten Son of God and the only way of salvation.
Repenting and laying aside of one’s self, the true believer surrenders to the Lordship of Christ. Not because they want a “way out of hell” but rather because they see Him as supremely worthy to be worshipped. Recognizing there is no way to obtain the righteousness required of a Holy God apart from the cleansing fountain offered by Jesus Christ, humbly one bows before Him.
For those of us who do know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, our greatest opportunity during this age is to worship Him. In doing so, our lives reflect the fruits of the Holy Spirit which are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (Galatians 5:22-23). As our lives reflect Him, people are drawn to desire Him. Then, when given the opportunity to speak, we rely on the Holy Spirit to guide our words so they might come to know Him. So, as our greatest opportunity is to praise and worship Him with our lives, He uses that to bring others to Him. Whenever facing trials, our joy, hope, patience and love shine forth as a beacon of light others. Therefore, our lives can be used by God to bring others to Himself
Concluding thoughts:
The word of the Holy Spirit’s miraculous presentation on the day of Pentecost spread quickly. By this, God drew many curious hearts to come and look at what happened. Then, Peter preached as lead by the Spirit. 3000 were saved that day.
So, what is the greatest opportunity you have today? You have the chance today to say Yes to Jesus. Will you?
