We Worship a Risen Lord–Part 1: Foretold in Scripture

foretold

We Worship a Risen Lord As Foretold in Scripture.

If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:9-10).

Key to the gospel message is this:  Christ died on a cross paying the price justly deserved by humanity.  Therefore, the unblemished shed His blood as an atonement for the sins of the ungodly, unrighteous who deserved death of whom we all are.  But if that was all, there would be no reason to rejoice at His death.  That is, apart from this truth! God raised Him from the dead, victorious over death, sin and hell. He returned to His throne seated at the right hand of the Father.  And because of that He can offer eternal life to all who will believe and accept Him as Lord and Savior of their life.

Foretold in Scripture

From His humble birth to the cross, every detail was foretold of within the pages of the Old Testament.  Over 350 details precisely predicted and fulfilled in the birth, life, death and resurrection.  This could not have been coincidence, as these predictions spanned thousands of years penned by various human hands, that God used to write His Word of Truth.  Then, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.  All this proving that Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the Messiah, the son of God who came to pay the price of sin for us once and for all.  His sacrifice meaningless without God’s miraculous resurrection of His Son from the dead on the third day as promised.

Furthermore, Jesus is seated on the right hand of God ever making intercession for all of us who believe in Him, desiring His gift of salvation, and grasping hold of this truth.  God raised Him from the Dead and with that same power He raises us from the spiritual death in which we dwell into newness of life in Him, by Him and through Him.

Christ’s Resurrection Foretold in Scripture: Psalm 119: 1,4

The Lord said unto my Lord, “Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool…The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”

Note, the words used here in Hebrew are the Lord Yahweh (Jehovah) said unto Adonai (LORD).  God the Father said to God the Son, “Sit thou at my right hand.”  The Son in perfect obedience did all that the Father asked of Him.  Therefore, He is worthy of honor and glory and praise.

The Gospel Message foretold in Scripture in  Psalm 16: 9-11

Therefore, my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Furthermore, Psalm 22:15, 26-27 thou hast brought me into the dust of death…. The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live forever.  All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.

The prophet Hosea foretold In Scripture His death and resurrection.

Hosea 6: 1-3 Come and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Then Hosea wrote in chapter 13:14  I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction And Paul wrote of the fulfillment of this. I Corinthians 15: 54-56 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it.  It shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation. (Is 25:8-9).  Herein Isaiah presented a dual prophecy.  First, God raised Him from the dead. Secondly, the future millennial reign of Christ.

Prophetic Glimpse of the Spear and the Burial of Jesus

The custom of the day was to break the bones of those on the cross to cause their final death.  Yet, when the soldiers looked upon Jesus, they saw that He was already dead.  Then they drove a spear into his side. The spear went through the pericardial sac filled with water and into His heart. Therefore, blood and water flowed freely out.  Ah, the Sovereignty of God that even entered the hearts and minds of these Roman Soldiers to cause them to fulfill the scriptures they had never heard of.

Zechariah wrote hundreds of years before.  And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn (Zech.12:10)

Tradition would have it that all who died on the cross would be thrown into a common grave.  However, God placed in the heart of Joseph of Arimathea to ask for the body of Jesus.  Jesus died between two thieves and was buried in a rich man’s tomb as prophesied by Isaiah.  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth (Isaiah 53:9).   Joseph did not do this to fulfill scripture, for he was most likely unaware His action was foretold in Scripture.  However, his act did fulfill scripture.

Thoughts:

Humanly impossible for all the scriptures of prophecy to be fulfilled in Jesus.  However, they were!  Proof Jesus is who He says He is!  The Only Begotten Son of God who came to bring Salvation to the world.  The Sacrificial Lamb who paid the penalty of our sin!  So, the question remains.  Do You know Him as Savior and Lord of Your Life?

If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:9-10).
