Throughout the twentieth century, the secular humanist movement grew, bombarding humanity with their ideology. Abraham Maslow laid out the hierarchy of needs for every man and woman to reach full self-actualization; although, he believed only a few achieve such a goal. Yet, he laid forth a foundation or goal that we might structure society in a manner to raise a new and better society. There were many other psychologists and philosophers at the same time, such as Jean Paul Sartre, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Karl Marx. All believed that man, without God; could be capable of being loving, kind, and fully self-actualizing. Without God, the human race would achieve love, hope, joy, and prosperity. Based on science, experimentation, and reasoning; humanity would flourish into a global Utopian world. So, what happened? When the social experiments all failed, then what?
Hitler’s atrocious acts against the Jewish people were grounded in scientific “survival of the fittest.” As David Berlinski wrote in The Devil’s Delusion, “A sinister current of influence ran from Darwin’s Theory to Hitler’s policy of extermination.”[1] Or the fact that Stalin relied heavily on the ideals of Karl Marx, leading the USSR into the future from a group of peasant farmers into the industrial revolution, while killing all who stood in his way. After all, if there is no God; who, can say anything is wrong? Did not both Adolf Hitler, along with the German People believe this to be for the good of society? Or Stalin who believed he was leading the USSR into greatness; where they would flourish? Yet, despite these failures; the secular humanists regrouped to write Manifesto II in 1973.
BASED ON SCIENCE OR NOT?
Everything that the secular humanists base their core beliefs upon, according to them is science and scientific experimentation. So, when socialism and Nazism failed; they had to come back to say in Manifesto II, “Nazism has shown the depths of brutality of which humanity is capable. Other totalitarian regimes have brought evil as well as good. Science has sometimes brought evil as well as good.”[2] Despite this they dug deeper in to a belief that “religion was the greater evil” in part as Christopher Hitchens and Charles Dawkins proclaimed because of the dangerous sexual repressions. Perhaps why Humanist Manifest II dealt a lot with sexual freedoms, promoting of abortions and divorce. But how did that work out?
Despite many buying in, we have an epidemic of suicide, single parent homes facing poverty, and drug addiction because people are seeking personal happiness where none can be found. Counterfeit joys of sexual freedoms, alcohol, and drugs cannot fulfill the true longings found within the heart of mankind. So, many are left with the feelings of loneliness, brokenness, and despair.
Furthermore, when the scientists discovered “the Big Bang”; many tried to hide its discovery, because, it gave credence to the Universe having had a beginning. So, do the Secular Humanists really believe that science can lead the way; or only when science fits their mold? Indeed, the atheistic bias seen within the scientific community at large; crept into the experiments themselves. Despite that, evolution has failed to be proven. All the experiments and even archaeological finds prove it false. Still, they cling desperately to it as though a law; while, calling the “The Big Bang Singularity” truth a theory. This despite overwhelming scientific evidence proving it as true.
WHEN THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS ALL FAILED, NOW WHAT?
In 1980, “A Secular Humanist Declaration” was presented in the humanist magazine “Free Inquiry” written by Paul Kurtz. In it he calls for a democratic secular humanist movement. He also denounced all religious institutions as being invasively disallowing of freedom of thought or inquiry; demanding tolerance, that is unless you are Christian. Then in 2000, the Humanist Manifesto III; called for a planetary humanism. Having failed in each arena to achieve the Utopian society; it would only be reasonable to make it global? Yet, that is what Paul Kurtz proposes:
Humanist Manifesto 2000 emphasizes that we are responsible for our own destiny, and that we can best solve our problems by rational inquiry. It provides a strong defense of human rights. Of special significance is the “Planetary Bill of Rights and Responsibilities”: we have a responsibility to humanity as a whole, to end poverty and disease, and to ensure peace and prosperity for every member of the world community. The Manifesto recommends concrete reforms to achieve these goals: a new planetary income tax, the regulation of global conglomerates, open access to the media, populations stability, environmental protection, an effective security system, development of World Law, and a new World Parliament.[3]
Let’s look at where it has lead the United States; even to the dismay of the secular humanists. Our schools and campuses have reached the place of intellectual, scientific, and historic relativism in which truth is what ever I believe it to be. In other words, there is no truth.
FACING THE LIES, FINDING TRUTH
Before we can face the evil within; we each must stop and look at how we arrived in this place to begin with. Gradually, we embraced the ideologies of the secular humanist movement and gave them the power to overtake our thought systems; making us question God. They infiltrated our political system, our laws, and our schools. Suddenly, we felt guilty for our faith in Christ Jesus. We apologized to our children, our neighbors, and our Christian friends for our beliefs. It is no wonder we have reached this place in history. So, what can we do? Over the next few posts, I want to expose the fallacies of the Secular Humanistic Worldview and present for you a case for Christianity.
Only the Bible presents for us the truth of the human condition and a means of salvation. Only in Christ Jesus can we find our being; abounding with true hope, joy, love and strength. Created in the image of God, our hearts long for royalty, goodness, and the life we were created for. Yet, free will allows us to choose; and mankind chose self-promotion and self-reliance. Which is why we are so restless, disenchanted and unsatisfied. The Bible reveals the reality of mankind’s dilemma.
2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hat committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).
CONCLUSION:
All the social experiments of the secular humanists have failed to bring peace. They failed in Germany, in the Socialist regime of Stalin, and they have lead us to a place of division, anger and relativism. Christians allowed them in with great power; because, deep down we wanted to believe in our own “goodness without God.” Yet, without God, where is there any foundation for “good.” Relativism, militant atheism, and nihilism plagues our youth. Is it too late for our country? I don’t think so; God’s promises have always remained true and His promise to Israel was:
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).
That same promise is to us today. More recently, we have seen hope for our nation returning to God; but, we cannot become complacent and we must learn from Nehemiah what true restoration looks like: spiritual, political, and social.
