Questioning God’s Goodness. Who, Why and Why not?

Questioning God's Goodness

My plan had been to move on to discussing “How to Not abuse the goodness of God”.  However, I believe it best to those around us who are constantly questioning God’s goodness.  They surround us.  But even more tragic, we see that same tendency within our own hearts.  A crisis occurs and we question if God is truly kind.  Or perhaps, we think,  He doesn’t really care about us or our situation.  However, isn’t that what the Israeli nation did as they went through the wilderness?  How quickly they forgot His loving-kindness and His miracles.    Do we not as a nation and as a people do the same thing?  When there is a tragedy, such as the 911 attack on the world trade centers, mass shootings, hurricanes, and now the coronavirus; people who never spoke of God before suddenly blame all that is bad on Him.

They proclaim this as proof that God does not exist.  Because if He did exist, they say and if He is truly good, then none of this could happen.  With that they suddenly feel so justified.  But if He did not exist, the blame lies fully on humanity who has self-destroyed the earth, the planet, and each other.  Living proof of devolution rather than evolution.  Therefore, how is it that they cannot see,  it is  the acts of a humanity who deny God who are the real problem.

And how can they or we look upon and blame the only One who so graciously prevents us from plunging completely into the abyss: God Himself.  “their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste” (Deuteronomy 32:35). His Goodness is all that holds us from falling.

Questioning God’s Goodness

It is His Loving-kindness, Grace and Mercy that brings us still the sunrise, holds our planet earth within its orbits, and smiles upon each baby’s birth.  The molecules of DNA so complex with God’s genius written upon each strand.  Could chance have created something so beautifully structured?   Never!  The wonder and beauty of this earth sings forth His praise.  Yet, humanity tries to ignore Him, cast God aside.  Then, when He allows them partially what they want, by allowing the world to continue its merry way toward self-destruction.  Well, then these creatures who denied Him, blame Him and are found questioning God’s goodness. Were it not for His benevolence and grace, He would have given us what we deserved so long ago: total annihilation!

Oh, so you say, He could have not allowed evil in the world to begin with.  Ah, then we could have never even known what it was to love truly, for we would not have been given choice at all.  Instead, He would have been a master puppeteer, rather than a benevolent loving Father.

Jeremiah 4:

18 “Your ways and your doings
Have procured these things for you.
This is your wickedness,
Because it is bitter,
Because it reaches to your heart.”

19 O my soul, my soul!
I am pained in my very heart!
My heart makes a noise in me;
I cannot hold my peace,
Because you have heard, O my soul,
The sound of the trumpet,
The alarm of war.
20 Destruction upon destruction is cried,
For the whole land is plundered.
Suddenly my tents are plundered,
And my curtains in a moment.
21 How long will I see the [f]standard,
And hear the sound of the trumpet?

22 “For My people are foolish,
They have not known Me.
They are [g]silly children,
And they have no understanding.
They are wise to do evil,
But to do good they have no knowledge.”

Yet, Is There Hope?

Certainly, there is.

“If you will return, … says the Lord,
“Return to Me;
And if you will put away your abominations out of My sight,
Then you shall not be moved.
And you shall swear, ‘The Lord lives,’
In truth, in [a]judgment, and in righteousness;
The nations shall bless themselves in Him,
And in Him they shall glory.”  (Jeremiah 4:1-2).

14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 15 Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.  (2 Chronicles 7:14-15).

Concluding thought:

How long will we continue to abuse the goodness of God?  We, as individuals and as a nation need to bow before Him, repentant of our foolish pride in questioning God’s goodness.  Remembering all that He has so blessed us with, let’s us come before Him in worship and praise.  And let it begin with my own heart.
