So, it was in our last post, the king of Syria realized he was unable to beat God’s people and left them alone. However, it wasn’t long until he decided to try again. This time he surrounded Samaria, preventing any commerce and forcing the people into financial distress. A famine ensued and the people cried out to the king of Israel for help. One woman cried that she and another had killed and eaten her son to survive. Then, the second woman refused to kill her son as promised so they could eat. The king was rightfully horrified by this. Immorality, paganistic ritual filled the land and his people. Morally outraged, he rent his clothes, put on sackcloth and called for Elisha’s death. Typical of most Moralizers, the king was perhaps rightfully outraged; however, he was blinded to God’s truth and his own guilt.
The king of Israel failed to accept his guilt. He had continued in encouraging pagan worship throughout the land. In 2 Kings 3:2-3, we read of him. (Jehoram) wrought evil in the sight of the Lord; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made. Nevertheless, he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom. He felt himself somewhat righteous because he had destroyed the temples of Baal; yet, he failed to turn to or yield to God. On occasion, he made the right choice; but his heart was not open to God nor His commands. Indeed, he blamed God and Elisha for the famine in Israel. Not once did he consider God’s truth or that he, as well as the people were guilty, deserving punishment.
Moralizers so Blinded to God’s Truth and Their Guilt
We see a lot of the same outrage by the Moralizers today. Often, they are screaming about racism and division; although, they are the dividers. Never do they accept that the guilt which is theirs to hold. The moralizers scream continuously with moral outrage as though they are the authority on morality. However, at the same time they deny that there is one true God without whom there is no compass for morality. “The way of the fool is right in his own eyes” (Proverbs 12:15). When we try to embrace “all” as true, then truth dies, and nothing is true. However, for the moralizer all he/she says they see as truth; because, they believe they are the moral compass within themselves. Furthermore, they believe in their embracing of what they call tolerance to accepting all; they harshly condemn anyone who stands for truth.
Oddly enough they began by saying science was the foundation for truth. However, now science has been completely cast aside for relativism where no truth stands. Given that, then how can they pretend moral outrage if there is no gauge for morality? They also believed that innately mankind would rise to a greater utopian society of his own accord if given enough liberality and acceptance. Yet, we see that instead violence increases, fury boils over into every conversation, and division widens; because, there is no moral compass. What remains are moralizers who are blinded to God’s truth and their own guilt in all that is happening today.
A Feigned Outrage
They cry outrage at animal cruelty for experimental research with animals; while, at the same time advocating the slaughter of fetal and newborn lives while selling the parts for research. A border wall is immoral they scream, while they turn a blinded eye to poverty in our own streets while pouring millions into welfare programs for those illegally here. How horrible that children are separated from the professed parents at the border! However, they never stop to see how many of these are children stolen or sold by their real parents for trafficking. Do they really care to know the truth, or do they accept as true whatever fulfills their self-exalting moralizer hearts? Because they believe they are right, they march forward ignoring God’s truth. What they do not realize is that their only hope and our only hope as a nation is to turn back to God.
So, the king of Israel sent forth his messenger to kill Elisha. He said to Elisha, “Behold this evil is of the Lord; what should I wait for the Lord any longer?” (2 Kings 6:33). Shortly behind him came the king with his closest servant on whom he leaned upon. Elisha tells them that within 24 hours, the people will be given abundance of food and provisions and the markets would be restored. He did not reveal God’s plan; but the moralizer once more mocked God. As the servant of king Jehoram said, “Behold if God opened the windows of heaven, the markets would not respond such.” (paraphrase of 2 Kings 7:2).
Concluding Thoughts
Elisha stood unafraid; because, he knew the truth and he knew God. This has been the case throughout this series. He lived in a time of rebellion against God, false ideologies were rampant. Yet, his steadfast relationship with God, his fearless proclaiming of the truth, and his prayers stayed off the attacks of the enemies. How long, oh Lord will you deal with our nation with such grace? We need men and women who will courageously, boldly speak the truth of the Gospel message. Furthermore, we need mighty prayer warriors.
There is no other God, but you. You reign Sovereign and will accomplish all that You have planned. Victory is already in Your hands. Give us the wisdom and the strength to stand firm in this truth. If Lord it be Your will, please say our nation from the moralizer so blinded to God’s truth. Open their eyes to see their guilt that they might repent and that our nation might be restored. Guide us Lord, every step of the way that we might stand firm, knowing your army surrounds us even when we cannot see them clearly. It is in the precious name of Jesus that we pray, Amen.
