In this journey as humans, we want recognition and to stand strong. Regardless of the topic, we want to be right and to have the final say. Yet, in God’s Kingdom; we are called upon to be humble. Just as Jesus humbly bowed to the will of the Father, obedient unto the cross; we are called to humbly bow in obedience to the Father’s will. Asked to serve our brothers and sisters; while teaching the truth of the gospel with gentleness, kindness, and humility. It is not about being first. Instead, when we see even a glimpse of the Glory of Jesus Christ, though through a glass dimly; we bow in humility as to the grace He has given unto us.
This lesson Jesus taught His disciples repetitively. He gave His apostles the special powers to heal the sick; yet, cautioned them to remain humble and faithful, recognizing the power to be from God, not their own. Furthermore, Jesus took a few to the Mount of Transfiguration where His Glory was displayed. They watched as He aptly answered the Pharisees, using scripture. He patiently taught them well.
Beyond all that, He told them repetitively of His coming betrayal, how He would be beaten, ridiculed, mocked, and would die on a cruel cross to be the sacrificial lamb. Yet, they each time, only demonstrated concern regarding their own position in the coming Kingdom. Perhaps they believed He would establish that Kingdom immediately following His resurrection. So much so, they discounted the death and only could think about the coming Kingdom and their place in it.
Do we do the same?
God’s Kingdom
Certainly, they heard Him speak of His crucifixion to come in Mark 8:31-38, Mark 9:30-32, and Mark 10:32-34. However, they remained focused on God’s Kingdom. Each time, Jesus professed that the least shall be greatest and that those who follow Him must take up their cross to follow. This journey takes us down many dark and winding paths filled with sorrows, temptations and trials. However, God’s Gracious, loving hand is there to guide us. He never promised a journey of riches, fame, or human power; however, He did promise to walk beside us every step of this journey. God’s Kingdom will one day stand; but, until then we are asked to walk humbly in the footsteps of Jesus.
When God bids us “Leave everything secure behind and follow me into an unknown future”; we must step forth trusting His heart. Knowing that He only desires our best; our fears fade, as we focus on Him. Fixing our eyes on the cross; we boldly stand in His Grace. Willingly we pick up whatever cross; because, we place our hands in His nail scarred hands.
Recently, I face that question. For the good of God’s Kingdom, I must lay aside all the comfort I have, step into the unknown to serve where God’s commands I go. “Perfect Love casts out all fear”
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because, fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” I John 4:18
God’s Transforming Grace
God is more concerned about transforming our hearts, than He is with our momentary comfort here. Why? So that we may experience the fullness of His joy one day in God’s Kingdom. He prepares our hearts through this journey in order that we might experience perfect love, joy and hope in the future in God’s Kingdom with Him. (And even here on this earth, as we live by faith alone with God as our greatest treasure.)
We must not overlook the cross, seeking the gifts of God, instead of the giver of the gift of Grace. Rather, we must focus on the abounding grace He has given us. Only then, do we learn to constantly stand in abiding, steadfast joy; regardless of the storms we face.
