How Faith is Found on the Road to Emmaus

The Road to Emmaus

Truth is of the utmost importance.  Without it we have nothing on which to anchor our lives nor our souls.  When facing questions of life, we need to know what is true beyond any shadow of doubt.  Furthermore, of all the questions: that which is most important of all is who do you believe Jesus is?  Because on your answer to this one question, hangs your eternity. But how do we know beyond any shadow of doubt that He is the only way of salvation? For that we must take a walk along the Road to Emmaus where true unwavering faith is found.  We find there that all of scripture pointed to Jesus Christ.  His birth, life, death and resurrection were foretold with such accuracy that no doubt could be left, if only one would study the word of God. No coincidence could account for hundreds of fulfilled prophecies

So many want to say that He was a prophet, a good man, a teacher; yet, deny the truth that He is God and He is the Son of God.  Others, even in His day, called Him a blasphemer, a liar, charged Him with high crimes and sent Him to the cross to die.  Little did they realize that for this He had come.  Oh, yes, they had read Old Testament Scripture; but therein they had not seen the truth of how it spoke of Him. The prophets foretold the truth.  He must die as the sacrificial lamb-the final sacrificial lamb to pay the price for our sins.  All the Scribes and Pharisees wanted to jump past this vital truth to the day He would come to rule over Israel during the millennial reign. Yet, even in their denial of Him, they unwittingly fulfilled scripture.

The Road to Emmaus

How do we show others the way?  My heart wept bitterly when I heard of all those murdered in the mosque. More so, because I know that they did not know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. For the Muslim faith does not accept Him as God’s Son, nor accept His death and resurrection as payment for their sins.  Indeed, they do not believe that Jesus died on a cross.  Rather they teach that He was translated into heaven and another was placed on the cross in His place.  They believe in the virgin birth; but, deny that He is God—seeing Him as a teacher and prophet only.  But scripture is clear! There is no atonement for sin without the shedding of blood—that is the entire sacrificial system carried out by the priests. That was until Jesus Christ came as the FINAL Sacrificial lamb of God.

After Jesus death, burial and resurrection, He made several appearances to confirm the truth of what had happened.  The truth of the gospel must be spread and taught throughout the early church.  But how can one tell another of salvation without it sounding like some fairy tale story?  Along the road to Emmaus, Jesus taught us precisely how to proclaim the truth by demonstrating how Jesus fulfilled every prophecy foretold of Him over the thousands of years before His birth.  When He walked along the Emmaus road, we are told “beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27).  They had studied scripture; but they had missed this truth: “26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? (Luke 24:26).

Unwavering Faith Comes from Knowing Truth

Over the next few weeks or even months, I want us to go on a journey along the road to Emmaus.  As such, I pray God guide my words, study and thoughts; opening my mind to see and then reveal to you this foundational truth.  As we come to recognize the utter improbability that all the old testament scripture could have been fulfilled.  Yet, we will see that every word was fulfilled in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Through scripture we discover unwavering faith; because, our faith is built on indisputable truth.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables (2 Timothy 3: 16-4:4).

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).

An eloquent speaker or writer, I am not.  There is nothing I could write or say to convince you of the truth. However, God’s own word can and that is my prayer today.

Concluding Thoughts:

How I wish I could have walked along the road to Emmaus and heard the voice of Jesus expounding the scriptural truth of the Old Testament proclaiming Him as Savior, Messiah and King.  Yet, we can journey along the road to Emmaus because we do have the scripture.  All that Jesus revealed to these travelers, He can reveal to any who have an open heart to listen.
