How Can We Be Certain of the Second Coming of Christ?

Awaiting the Second Coming

Just as assuredly as the prophecies of old came true regarding Jesus Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection, so shall the prophecies of His second coming be completed.  Christ’s Second Coming is written in God’s stone tablets and will occur.  In due time, Christ will reign over all of heaven and earth as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  Daniel wrote of this truth in Daniel 9.  He had been praying for his people when Gabriel appeared before him.  Of this Daniel wrote.

O Lord hear. Lord, forgive,  O Lord, hearken and do. Defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name. And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God; Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.

At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore, understand the matter, and consider the vision. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. (Daniel 9:19-24).

Second Coming as King of Kings

Daniel’s revelation concerned specifically the nation of Israel.  The first 69 weeks is separated from the last week.  Therefore, Daniel was not specifically told of the gap allowing for the church age. Although, indirectly he was.  Because, it is foretold that the Messiah would be cut off and that the city would be destroyed, Christ died and then in 70AD, Titus the roman general destroyed the city of Jerusalem and its temple.  The 70th week to finish the transgression and to make an end of sins, to bring in everlasting righteousness and to anoint the most Holy is yet to come.

The final week is the 7 years of tribulation which will occur yet in the future.  Daniel saw in his vision an earthly prince (the antichrist) make a covenant of peace with Israel for 3 ½ years then once more he will put an end to Jewish worship and set himself up as an object of worship. (2 Thessalonians 2:4 and Revelations 13:8).

The Old Testament spoke of the Messiah coming to set up His Kingdom on earth.  But it spoke of His redeeming His people from sin.  The only way  He could accomplish our redemption was to come to die. Thereby paying the price for our sin.  Thanks be to God that He died for all our sins, Jew and Gentile.

Awaiting the Second Coming of Christ

He called upon the Jewish nation to spread to the gospel message to the Gentiles. Now, He calls upon us  the church to spread the truth of the gospel message to all the world by word and by deed. Just as Jesus Commanded us.   And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Mark 16:15-16).

We should be awaiting the coming of Christ to rapture His church with great fervency.  All prophecy was fulfilled concerning His First Coming and all will be fulfilled concerning the Second Coming of Christ.  Knowing this should we not feel the urgency to tell all of whom we meet.  True, some will be saved during the tribulation; but, shouldn’t love command us to tell them now?

Acts 1:6-11

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them. “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.” But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. And ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  When he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up. And a cloud received him out of their sight.

While they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

We must not merely stand staring into heaven awaiting His return. But rather we must be busy telling others of His Second Coming and bidding them to come.

Concluding Thoughts:

Our life is but a vapor compared to eternity.  Shouldn’t we want all to come to know Him?  Our main purpose must be to tell others of Him.  And to praise Him for all that He has done and all that He will.  The Second Coming of Christ will be with Glory, Honor and Majesty.  We groan for that day.

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.  And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. Romans 8: 22-23
