God has revealed Himself to mankind in many diverse manners. He revealed Himself in nature, the sheer complexity of all His creation displays so much about who He IS. Furthermore, throughout Scripture, God revealed Himself. Over the past few weeks, the focus of this series has been to review the lives of such Patriarch’s as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses. Through their lives, we have seen God’s Grace, Faithfulness and Sovereignty displayed. Despite their frailties and failures, God provided a way for His People. He always through trials transformed them into the men of faith they became. As we came to Moses, I have paused to write about attributes of God as so richly displayed in the books of Moses. The Glory of God and our role. One aspect of His Glory is His Sovereignty. Another crucial to our knowledge of God is the truth, God is Holy!
Often, we speak of God as Holy with a rather nonchalant manner. Too often, we see it at a distance; never recognizing the impact that truth must have upon our own lives. Throughout Leviticus, God told Moses to tell the people, “Ye shall be Holy; for I the Lord your God am Holy” (Leviticus 19:2). This was not a request of God, it was a command. He did not say as we often do, “Well, you should maybe try to live a holy life.” No, it was much more than a command, “You will be Holy! I, the LORD your God will ascertain that to be the case.” Sometimes it may be through great trials that He transforms His people. For the nation of Israel, God reigned judgement upon the arrogant, rebellious unbelievers among them. He cleansed His People of them then and He will cleanse His church today.
Revering the Truth: God is Holy!
To serve Him fully as Lord, I must come to the place where I recognize the absoluteness of His Holy Nature. Bowing before Him in reverence and awe, recognizing my utter unworthiness to be in His presence. Only then, do I fully see the depth of His Love and Grace toward me.
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, ‘Here am I; send me’ (Isaiah 6:1-8).
God is Holy! What Does that Mean for Me?
- The Holiness of God is unobtainable by my efforts. I will always fall short!
- Jesus Christ, the perfect echoing image of the Father, is Holy! Therefore, I must desire to emulate Him, denying myself to follow Him.
- There is no way I can emulate Christ without His Grace having paid the price for me on the Cross. And then only by surrendering to His will, no matter what I face; allowing Him to transform my heart one piece at a time.
- There is no other name upon heaven or earth by which men may be saved than that of Jesus Christ; therefore, I must never be ashamed to boldly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.
- My joy rests in knowing Him, not in the things of this world. So overwhelmed in knowing, He chose me with all my failures to be His Child, to cloak me in the righteousness of Christ and to transform me into His Image.
- I must be willing to every moment, die to me; that, He might live.
- Resting assured, I know He will finish the work He began in me. Even if that be by fire.
- God commands His church be Holy and He will cleanse it. All those teaching false doctrine to gain profit here upon this earth, will one day stand before His judgement seat.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
God is Holy, and He commands His people to be Holy. However, mankind is drowning in His own sin, unable to face a Holy God. Yet, He has provided the way through paying the price for our sin, that we might be redeemed. He has also promised to transform us into the image of His son; even knowing, that will take a lifetime to complete. The question is do you know Him? How you glimpsed at His Holiness and realize that you need a Savior?
