Gift of Teaching: The Torchbearers For Truth

Teaching: Torchbearers for truth

Those with the Motivational Gift of Teaching are focused on truth, accuracy, and detail.  They study each word in three categories.  First, the definition of the word itself.  Second, how it fits in the context with the scriptures surrounding it.  Third, they want to know how it fits doctrinally with the rest of the Bible.  Researching, studying for hours; they are most fulfilled by having discovered the truth.  Meanwhile, they are quick to hear heresy and to speak out against it with solid, sound arguments based on scripture.

Designed by God to keep us doctrinally sound; they play a vital role in the body of Christ.  Yet, because their greatest joy comes from discovering and proving the truth; they may not seem as interested in people as they are in knowledge.  This can cause them to appear distant or calculating; while listening more than talking.  Their brain constantly sorting and filing the information flowing in; they are very attentive to every detail.

Because they focus on detailed truth; often, they are falsely seen as too critical.  Their passionate patience to discover every detail of truth before acting; others see as procrastination; although really it is not. Those with the gift of Teaching believe: “fools rush in where angels fear to trod.”

EXAMPLE IN THE BIBLE: Luke

Luke had a very specific eye for detail, researching the truth before writing.  Clearly, we see this in both the Gospel of Luke as well as in the Acts of the Apostle.

Dear friend who loves God Several biographies of Christ have already been written using as their source material the reports circulating among us from the early disciples and other eyewitnesses. However, it occurred to me that it would be well to recheck all these accounts from first to last and after thorough investigation to pass this summary on to you, to reassure you of the truth of all you were taught. Luke 1 (TLB)

With the investigative skills of a researcher, Luke checked and rechecked the information he obtained for accuracy before writing his gospel account Jesus’ life.  Certainly, God authored the writings of the Bible; but, in this case chose someone gifted as a Teacher to pen the words.  Not everyone with the Motivational Gift of Teaching are teachers; many are lawyers and physicians.  Remember Luke is a physician.

Gift of Teaching:  In the Spirit vs In the Flesh

Disciplined, confident, reverent, diligent, thorough, and patient describes those with the gift of teaching, when walking in the Spirit.  Whenever they are walking in the flesh, they display self-indulgence, slothfulness, anxiety, restlessness, fragmented, and unpredictable.

Do You Know Someone with The Gift of Teaching?

Don’t be surprised! They aren’t always working as teachers.  Many of the best teachers have other motivational gifts such as exhortation or mercy; however, when they are Professional Teachers, most likely they are Professors.  Glean from their knowledge base. Don’t take offense when they challenge your knowledge.  Their questions and debates urge you to search and discover the truth for yourself.  Be willing to question and prayerfully study yourself to determine if they are accurate or if they have somehow faltered in their interpretation.

If Teaching is Your Gift

Throughout your research, be aware of false prophets who could lead you astray or intellectuals who draw you in. Sometimes your love of knowledge can lead you toward philosophies or teachings that really don’t represent the truth of Gospel.  Remain steadfast in prayer, always seeking God’s wisdom to discern the truth, as you carefully dissect each word. Also, be aware that your knowledge is wonderful to have; but, teaching the truth to others builds the church.  For that reason, don’t keep your torch hidden under a basket.

Paul’s Warning:  Those with the gift “of teaching, teach.”  It is good to research, study and discover the truth.  Even though that has satisfied your desires, providing great pleasure; don’t forget to share that knowledge by teaching others.
