Life so often is filled with moments of sorrow or even despair. We look around us and see so much darkness in the world. The human journey on this earth is filled with sorrows, fighting, and disappointments. All too often, as we look around us; we see men and women searching for meaning and hope in whatever manner they can. Each searching to find their identity. We search for peace; yet, are surrounded by wars, fighting, and personal struggles; seeking to find answers within ourselves, where none can be found. However, it was into such a world; that Christ came. The light of the world came to shine forth into our world of darkness, to bring hope into our hopelessness.
Mankind would like to say that this is it. We are born, we live and then we die. Yet, our soul yearns for infinity. We search for freedom; yet, live lives filled with necessity. C.S. Lewis once wrote: “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” Therein lies the truth. Our souls yearn for God, our creator; yet, we live in a world broken by sin. So, is there hope to live our lives in this broken world with an abiding, steadfast joy that rises above our circumstances. That, I can confirm to be yes.
Light in the Midst of Darkness
In Christ Jesus, we are new creations. Because of His redemptive work on the cross, our spirits which are separated from God by sin can be united to God. The Bible teaches: “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17), blessed “with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1: 3). As such, in Christ; the individual Christian is given steadfast joy; because, “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith” (Galatians 5:22). Yet, the sad reality is that most Christians do not know the truth of their identity in Christ Jesus; beyond being saved from damnation. For that reason, many Christians live lives of quiet desperation; blown to and fro by the trials and sorrows of this world. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
That is what I wrote in detail about in my book, Abiding, Steadfast Joy. As we come to know the truth of our identity, resting upon the truth of the word; we learn to abide in Him. He is the hope our hearts yearn for, the greatest treasure that can be found. “In Him (the Lord) we live, and move, and have our being”[1] (Acts 17:28). Without Him, the best mankind can hope for is mere existence with a never-ending search for being: which is despair; whether one recognizes it or not.
Concluding thoughts
Some may call me a fool for believing; but, if they look deep within your own soul, they will realize the pit of darkness that needs to be filled with light. I urge you to just open His word and read the book of John; because, there you will find the truth. Let Jesus shine His light into your life.
