Can You See the Army of God Surrounding You?

Army of God

In a world of complex problems, varying ideologies, and hostility; how do we as Christians stand firm on God’s truth while remaining beacons of His love?  Some would say we must compromise in order to maintain power to fight against the world.  However, once we compromise on God’s word, we cannot stand at all.  Instead we ourselves fall.  That was the case when the nation of Israel divided into two kingdoms after the death of Solomon.  Rehoboam was the King of Judah (including the Benjaminite) and Jeroboam was King of the other tribes. Afraid that he might lose power because of the temple being in Jerusalem, he led his people into idol worship.  Throughout the kingdoms to follow, God sent prophets to help guide His people. Some would listen, others not.  The Army of God was present to protect them.

The true prophets were often hated by the enemy nations and often by the very people they were assigned to teach.  Yet, in those days, as ours; it was the Army of God that protected those whom He chose.  There is always a spiritual war going on around us.  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand (Ephesians 6:10-18).

Elisha was such a prophet who saw and understood “the battle is the Lords”.

Elisha Saw the Army of God

Elisha, a dedicated man of prayer, gained insight into the activities of the enemy.  God would reveal to him the evil plots of the king of Syria.  Elisha advised the king of Israel and thereby thwarted the attempts of the king of Syria.  Naturally, the king of Syria wanted Elisha killed.  One morning Elisha’s servant went out and saw they were surrounded by the enemy. Frightened he ran back to tell Elisha.  However, Elisha prayed; “Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see.”  (2 Kings 6:17).

And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw. Behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. (2 Kings 6:17). Oh, that we too might see! The mountains surrounding us are full of horses and chariots of fire round about us.  God did not leave us alone.  Indeed, beyond the army of God that surrounds us, we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us.  We need not worry.  Even if it appears the enemy is winning, we know the victory is ours because of Jesus Christ.  Although there may appear to be battles that are lost, the war is already won.  Furthermore, truth be told, every battle is won; because, God is Sovereign and knows what the best for us is to grow in His Grace and Love.

The Army of God Surrounds All Who Follow Him

Whatever the struggles you face in this life, if you know Christ as your Savior, victory is yours.  Look up and see the that the “mountains are full of horses and chariots of fire” to protect you.  Often, when facing trials, I question my own position with God.  When I feel my spirit revolt against an injustice or those whose pride presents a real danger to those I care for, I find myself wondering of my own position.  Yes, it is good to lay it all at the cross and allow God to reveal any chaff in my own heart.  However, there are times when it is His Spirit that reveals the evil being perpetrated by others.  Still, I must leave the battle to Him.

At times, He may choose that we speak and at other times He chooses we remain silent.  Whichever He chooses, follow His lead.  Through prayer, studying His word and allowing His spirit to guide you He will reveal to you His plan.  Patiently wait for Him to work it out.  The Army of God led by Jesus Christ is there to protect and guide every step of your journey through this treacherous land.  He won the victory and He is there with you.

Concluding Thoughts:

Over the course of the next few weeks, or however long it takes, I want to study the life of Elisha and perhaps even Daniel.  Both knew and saw the army of God leading their lives.  Let us learn how to keep our eyes on the victory that is ours.  Placing our trust in Him, we see every battle as a gift from God to give us His best and to display His Glory to the world around us.  Whatever it takes.
