Why is Abandoning the Cross a Dangerous thing?

The Cross

It was a perilous time for the early Galatian church.  Having so recently accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ, they were bombarded by false teachers.  Paul recognized the danger of adding legalism to the gospel message.  Jesus Christ’s redemptive work on the cross had ripped asunder the veil standing between God and mankind.  There could be no other means of salvation.  The law had failed; because, the human heart could never attain the righteousness required to commune with a perfectly righteous and just God.  Jesus Christ, left His throne in heaven to walk among men, to suffer, and then to die on a cross, providing the propitiation for our sins. To add anything to that completed work is a heresy; just, as it is a heresy to abandon the cross.  Abandoning the gospel of the Cross is dangerous; because, there is no other means of salvation for sinful man.

Paul did not mince words as he went directly to the heart of the issue.  “I am amazed that you are turning away so soon from God who, in his love and mercy, invited you to share the eternal life he gives through Christ; you are already following a different “way to heaven,” which really doesn’t go to heaven at all.  For there is no other way than the one we showed you; you are being fooled by those who twist and change the truth concerning Christ” (Galatians 1:6-7, TLB).  Abandoning the Cross, the truth of God; is a very dangerous thing; because, there is no other means by which humans may be saved.

Abandoning the Gospel Message of the Cross? We must Never!

All too often, society calls us to abandon the gospel message and the cross; but, we must not.  Even within our churches, we find both extremes of abandonment—those pride-filled legalizers and the liberals who introduce secularism.  Both abandon the truth of the gospel.  Beware of false teachers!  “If any man preach any other gospel unto you that that ye have received, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:9).  There is no other way of salvation.  Only the blood of Christ can cleanse our hearts of sin.  The cross of Christ is the only way for man’s regenerate heart to be transformed.

The law had failed.  It merely pointed out the utter depravity of men and women’s hearts.  Therefore, there is no other means of salvation.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit (Romans 8:2-4).

There are “so-called” churches today who are ashamed to place a cross on their building or to display one; because, it might offend someone and reduce their attendance.  Beware!  Whom would you rather offend, man or God?  Without the cross, we have no good news!  There is no gospel without the finished work of Christ on the Cross and His resurrection conquering death and sin forever!  “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10).

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

Beware of false teachers who attempt to lead you astray.  How?  By studying the word of God, day and night with open faces beholding the beauty of Christ Jesus on the cross. As you do, let the Holy Spirit guide you and transform your heart one glory at a time; because He will as you surrender to Him.  There may be moments in which it seems your only glimpse of Christ is as through a glass dimly; but, keep your eyes on Him and see what He will do in you and through you.  Do not add to the gospel message, nor take away the significance of the cross.

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:17-18).
