Proverbs 18:10 and 24 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are [e]safe…there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Is that not what we need? Particularly now when all around us is fear, chaos, and destruction. Oh how we need a strong tower to run to and a loyal friend who will never leave us.
But what do we mean by strong tower? A place of refuge where safety is found. Our hiding place from the storms of life. If we turn to Judges 9:50 we read of the story of Abimelech, King of Israel. Abimelech was one of Gideon’s sons who decided to take over the kingdom by killing all his half-brothers and forcefully taking rule. When civil war broke out, Abimelech decided to go to Thebez.
Judges 9:50
50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.
52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.
54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
Strong Tower
So, all the men and women fled to the strong tower, wherein they found safety and a way out. Proverbs 18:10 tells us: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are [e]safe”. What is there in His Name that we might run to Him?
Perhaps we must begin with Jehovah Mekoddishkem – The Lord Who Sanctifies You.
“Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you. Exodus 31:13 NKJV
Our righteousness is not of our own, but His.
Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness
“This is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness”—Jeremiah 23:6
Cloaked with the righteousness of Christ we gain access to the strong tower, where we have refuge from the storms of this life.
Therefore: The Name of the Lord is a Strong Tower
For all who know Him as Savior and Lord, we find His names is a strong tower. Let’s look at just a few of His names.
El Shaddai—Lord God Almighty. Genesis 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
El Elyon- the Most High God- Psalm 57:2 I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.
Adonai—Lord, Master—God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-Owner of all creation—Exodus 6:3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name LORD I was not known to them.
Yahweh- the Great I AM—THE LORD GOD-first used in Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'”
El Olam: The Everlasting God-the creator of time who lives outside of time and space constraints. Psalm 90:1-2 Lord, You have been our [a]dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You [b]had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
Elohim: God—the creator and judge of the Universe, only found in Hebraic text, is plural denoting the Godhead as one-Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.”
Beyond all that:
We may call Him Father if we know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Adopted into the family of God as joint heirs with Jesus Christ, because he paid the price to set us free.
Abba: Father –
In Mark 14, Jesus intimately referred to Father when praying in the Garden of Gethesemanee. Yet, we find in Romans 8:15 we may use this same name as did Jesus, “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” And in Galatians 4:6 we are told,
“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
As such we know Him as:
Jehovah Nissi- The Lord my Banner—my victory in every battle of life.
And Jehovah Raah- The Lord my Shepherd- my comforter, protector and guide. spirit, uniting me with Him, my soul that I might have everlasting life with Him, my heart that I might love Him, and my body (whether he chooses to do so here or one day in His presence-I will be healed).
Jehovah Shammah: The Lord is There (always present in our moment). Nothing can separate me from His presence.
Jehovah Shalom: The Lord is Peace—The peace that restores my soul and steadies my course.
Jehovah Sabaoth: The Lord of Hosts—He is Sovereignly in Control, always and forever
So, why should I run to HIM,
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are [e]safe” Proverbs 18:10
Psalm 27:
4 One thing I have desired of the Lord,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
To behold the [a]beauty of the Lord,
And to inquire in His temple.
5 For in the time of trouble
He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock.
6 And now my head shall be [b]lifted up above my enemies all around me;
Therefore I will offer sacrifices of [c]joy in His tabernacle;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.
Psalm 36:
7How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
8 They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.
Finally,
Psalm 97:
The Lord reigns;
Let the earth rejoice;
Let the multitude of [a]isles be glad!
2 Clouds and darkness surround Him;
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
3 A fire goes before Him,
And burns up His enemies round about.
4 His lightnings light the world;
The earth sees and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6 The heavens declare His righteousness,
And all the peoples see His glory.
7 Let all be put to shame who serve carved images,
Who boast of idols.
Worship Him, all you gods.
8 Zion hears and is glad,
And the daughters of Judah rejoice
Because of Your judgments, O Lord.
9 For You, Lord, are most high above all the earth;
You are exalted far above all gods.
10 You who love the Lord, hate evil!
He preserves the souls of His saints;
He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the righteous,
And gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
And give thanks [b]at the remembrance of [c]His holy name.
And Friend:
If that were not enough, He is our Friend (which we will explore further next time)
