Poetry Sunday—A Mother’s Prayer

I searched through my archives of poems written and felt drawn to post this one.  I wrote this several years ago when one of my children had come to me with their heart broken by love.  My heart crushed with their sorrow; yet, I knew that God’s plan was never wrong.  His plan was to bring them good—even through the sorrow.   All I could do was listen and gently say, “You may not understand now; but, you will.  God’s love for you only allows what is good.  Wait, you will see—out of the ashes of this horrible pain will come His Joy into your life.” As a mother, my heart wishes that I could bear the pains of this journey for them.  I would rather be ill than to watch them suffer.  A thousand times, I would prefer my heart crush in place of theirs.  I know the same is true of you Fathers out there.  Truly, this prayer could be that of a Father as well.  I do not know why God drew me to this poem today.  Perhaps it is for you—to comfort your heart.

My Children and I-1982

1982 Me with my 3 greatest Joys of this life

A Mother’s Prayer

by Effie Darlene Barba

There is no pain so great, so deep

As when I see my dear child weep

When sorrows come or dreams are dashed

Their broken heart; their hopes are crashed

The wrenching pain cuts deep my heart

I fear that it shall rip apart

My tears pour down like searing rain

I cannot bear to see their pain

Oh Lord, dear Lord for this I plead

Please let me take their bitter reed

This is my prayer both day and night

Give me their pain and they delight

And then I felt your arm’s embrace

And saw the tears upon your face

The tenderness within your eyes

Had made me pause and realize

That you had felt my pain before

As your dear son my cross had bore

How great the pain you felt that day

My sin upon your son did lay

Your love for me, the guilty one

Endured the pain and watched your son

Bearing the wrath that sin demands

Rejected, beaten, nail pierced hands

And so, dear Lord, help me to see

Your plan for them as was for me

To drive them deep within your arms

Away from all these worldly harms

That they may hear Your Joy-filled song

Sung over them amidst the throng

In You their life remains secure

Your love for them is ever pure

And gentle eyes become their gain

The wisdom, hope that’s born from pain

And points their eyes to always see

Glorious Grace- Eternally

This I know.  God loves my children even more than this human heart is capable of and I can trust His plan for their lives.  His Grace and Love surrounds them—He will be their Joy.  He will be the strength that carries them through the storms of life.  He will be their light through their darkest valley.  On this I am sure.

What Is The Power Of Words In Faith And Condemnation?

What Is The Power Of Words In Faith And Condemnation?

As we come to the closing of John Chapter 12, Jesus cries out. Was it a shout for all to hear? Where did He cry out from? John has just written that Jesus had withdrawn from the crowd—then John eloquently proceeds with the discussion of Isaiah’s prophecies and how they are fulfilled. He showed us the barriers to faith amongst the crowds—even those who wanted to believe but feared the authorities. Then, John ends the chapter with these words of Jesus; yet, John does not set up the scene as he has before. He does not tell us where Jesus was when He cried out, nor does John reveal to whom Jesus cries out. Perhaps, that is the case because John wants us to see that this is a truth that is so relevant for you and I as well as those who heard it first. Truth is truth, whether I believe it or not. The earth was round, even when most men believed it to be flat. So what was this truth that Jesus cried out?

LIGHT OF TRUTH

“44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day” (John 12).

Poetry Sunday—When Terror Strikes

We are forever surrounded by the effects of a fallen world.  There is fighting, anger, tension, destruction, and ever growing signs of bleak darkness that fills our news reports.  Suicide bombers who give their own lives believing they are fighting against evil while at the same time becoming the face of evil and terror to a desperate world.  Battle lines are drawn with man against man—yet, the enemy is the darkness within our own hearts and souls that blind us to the only truth which matters.  When tragedy strikes many cry out, “Where is God?”  He is right where He has always been.  He is on His throne today in the midst of our tragedy, the same as He was when they hung His Beloved Son on the cross to pay for our sins.  Justice, righteousness demands that each of us should die for our own evil self exalting hearts.  It is Grace that steadies God hand of Mercy each and every day that this world continues to rotate in it’s orbit.  Patiently, God waits for one more sinner to come to repentance.  He waits for one more child to come to Him.  It is His love and Grace which calls me to testify of Him.  With the events of this year and this week in mind, I wrote this poem—I hope it points you to Jesus and lights a candle of hope in your heart today.

WHEN TERROR STRIKES

By Effie Darlene Barba

war

When terror strikes from every side

Inciting fear in every heart

When all I see is torn apart

How can I Lord in You abide?

And rest in peace upon they word

With all the hate and sorrow heard

From wretched men, so filled with pride

I need a place in which to hide

I turn and lift my eyes toward You

To search the dark, to understand

How can this be as You have planned?

When all the world seems so askew

By evil hearts so filled with sin

It’s hard to see Your love will win

When selfish hearts themselves pursue

Destruction, death and pain ensue

As I gazed there shone forth a light

And reaching forth a steady hand

That held at bay hell’s death command

With sovereign power and such might

It is Grace alone that bids you wait

While justice bids man’s final fate

That one more broken heart contrite

With blinded eyes to then find sight

Oh, Lord, please help me understand

That the same love that bore the cross

Is Your love for us when we face loss

That Grace holds firm Your Mighty hand

That every kindness we have known

Is proof Your grace for us is shown

For Justice would itself demand

That darkness, death consume our land

So, help me Lord to be a light

To spread your word where e’er I go

Your love, your hope, your joy to show

Your gospel truth to then take flight

Transforming hearts that one by one

They seek and find your precious son

That then your Glory shine so bright

Beams of Grace in the dark of night

Let us close with this Psalm from David.  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ….One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. ….I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord”  (Psalm 27).

What Is Your Greatest Treasure, Really?

It was late November 2006 when I had this nagging voice inside that urged me to send $500 to Truth for Life as a onetime gift. I had learned through the worst financial times to always trust God and that began with tithing (even when the money was tight). For me it was not a ritual, it was the least I could do and it was a prayerful act of faith and love. Beyond that I was generous to give whenever I felt God’s beckoning voice to give to others.   I had just bought the house in 2005 and my escrow had not been in the monthly payments. Unfortunately, I had not done well at saving the taxes for that year and would need to pay nearly 2700.00 in December for taxes.  I did not have the $2700.

my greatest treasure

I spent several days in prayer reminding God that I needed that 500 plus even more. Still, that voice inside could not be quieted. So, I wrote the check and mailed it to Alistair Begg’s ministry. Two weeks later, I received a $2500.00 bonus from my job. Every other year, before and after my bonus had been either $100 to $200. That year was different.  When I rushed to tell my boss thank you, I was nearly in tears.  Then, I told him how I knew it was God who moved his heart to give me exactly what I needed that year.  He had been God’s instrument whether he believed or not.  This is not the prosperity gospel. This is the story of obedient, sacrificial love and trust in a God who will supply my needs. God’s promises are not for expensive cars, fancy houses, or everything my heart desires; but, His promises are to provide what I need as I trust Him. That was a lesson He has shown me all along the way. If I see Him as my greatest treasure, I will always keep a wholesome perspective of money and possessions as well. Which brings us to the contrasting views concerning money of Mary and Judas as we see them in John 12.

THE ANOINTING OF JESUS BY MARY

On His journey back to Jerusalem, Jesus stopped in Bethany. He knew that the coming events would be those that lead Him to the cross. It was for this that He had come to the world to be the sacrificial lamb. It was nearing the time of the Passover and He would be the ultimate sacrifice His Father demanded for the price of mankind’s sin. In Bethany, He had stopped to see His friends once more and there was a large feast prepared in His honor. Martha was scurrying about as always serving the guests. This was her way of showing her love. Lazarus was leaned back, seated at the table with Jesus. He must have been clinging to His every word. After all, Jesus had raised him from the dead earlier that same year. Then Mary took a pound of spikenard worth a year’s wages (about $25,000 at that time) and poured it upon the head of Jesus and then His feet where she then dried His feet with her hair. She did not care about the cost. She wanted to shower upon Jesus her most prized possession as a display of her love, devotion, and total commitment to Him. This may have been all she had for her future, perhaps it was a part of her dowry, or some precious heirloom. We are not told of what greater significance the ointment may have held for Mary. We are only given a glimpse into her humbled heart filled with love for her Master and Savior. She was willing to give Him all that she had freely with all of her heart.

JUDAS OUTRAGED

Ah, but Judas became outraged. He was the money man. He carried the purse and quickly condemned her because this money could have been used “to feed the poor.” Sounded like an honorable thing to do. Why should this money be wasted this way? The truth being, Judas had joined in the following of Jesus so that he could be a part of the rich and the famous. He believed that Jesus would rise as the Messiah, become King, and as His purse bearer; Judas would be rich. So, Judas did believe in Jesus. Judas desired wealth and fame alongside Jesus. There are some amongst the religious who are very much like Judas. We see that among the large numbers who follow after the “prosperity gospel” of name it/claim it. They too, like Judas are filled with greed, selfish desire, and pride. Perhaps, Judas was the first prosperity gospel believer.

RESPONSE OF JESUS

“Let her alone, against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always” (John 12 7-8). Jesus has been preparing his disciples for the coming events. They did not want to know the truth; but, Jesus knew that they would remember His words after His resurrection. He needed to prepare them for the years of service and sacrifice that would be theirs as they began to spread the gospel. He needed them to see that He is their greatest treasure. Judas began to realize that there would be no worldly prosperity gained by following Jesus. That was when he chose to betray Jesus for $1000.00.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

Do you love and seek after God as your greatest treasure or do you seek Him that you might gain earthly treasure? Remember Jesus reminded us in Matthew 6 that earthly treasure is but fleeting. We cannot serve two masters. Either we choose to serve God or our fleshly desires. What is it that you most desire today? Do you desire God above all other earthly pleasures? Would you be willing to give Him your greatest earthly treasure because you love Him above all else? He has promised that when it comes to our needs, “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). He will richly bless you with His Joy, His Hope, His Love, His Glory, and eternal life with Him. What amazing love and Grace toward us who deserve none of this.

He gives me everything I need and with holds those things which I might think I want so I can always keep my eyes focused on Him. I trust Him to always know what is best. It is my prayer that He always keeps my eyes focused on Him. I pray the same for you today.

What Happens When The Light Of The World Shows Mercy?

What Happens When The Light Of The World Shows Mercy?

The feast of the tabernacles had ended and the Pharisees were frustrated that they had not found a way to “condemn” Jesus. Nicodemus had even suggested they had no cause; but, they found the words of Jesus offensive. How dare He suggest they did not understand the scripture! His words cut deep into their pride. They had spent a lifetime studying the scripture and working very hard to live an exemplary life. Surely, God would recognize all their goodness and their reward would be great. Still, this man from “Galilee” cut at their pride with His words. How dare He do that! They had gone away to their own homes while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. We know that was where He often retreated at night to pray. As Jesus returned to teach, the scribes and Pharisees came with a plan to entrap Him by presenting Him a case of “law.”

Shadows of Darkness

GUILTY, CAUGHT IN THE ACT

3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught[b] in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded[c] us that such should be stoned.[d] But what do You say?”[e] (John 8 NKJV). Christ bent down and started to write on the ground. What was He writing? We are not told. Perhaps, He was writing the actual law. ““If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, both the man and woman shall be put to death” (Leviticus 20:10 TLB). In this case, where is the man? They had brought the woman; but clearly, something was wrong with this picture. Being “caught in the act” meant they knew the man as well; yet, only brought the woman. Why? We are not told. Had one of these men entrapped her himself? Was she guilty? Most likely, as we see from the conversation Jesus has with her later; but, for this moment she was about to meet light, truth and be given grace. Jesus knew their hearts and also knew the heart of this woman.
