How To Overcome Depression Now Trust the Power Found in the Word

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 Corinthians 10 (NKJV)

We live in a world, surrounded by its brokenness. As Christians our task is to shine the light of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world in need of salvation. Yet, that is an arduous task to have given our own humanity. Sometimes the one we fight most is ourselves. Naturally, we are more prone to feel separated, lonely, angry, and frustrated with all that is going on around us. We are to joy in the Lord. We know that. One of the fruits of the spirit is joy, but why then do we tend to fall into Depression. So how can we overcome depression now in this world? The simple answer is to trust the power found in the Word of God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ²He was in the beginning with God. ³All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. ⁴In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. ⁵And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1 NKJV

¹⁴And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.¹⁵John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”¹⁶And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. ¹⁷For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1 NKJV

Knowing and Doing are Two Different Things

How then can we Overcome Depression now. What can we practically do? Some would say just “let go and let God.” But that is not that simple of a task to perform. Modern psychology talks a lot about Cognitive Behavior Therapy. However, did you know that the Bible gave us practical terms of Cognitive Behavior Therapy long before medical science suggested it. Furthermore, the Bible bases it on the Solid Foundation of the Gospel message, the Power of Jesus Christ indwelling us through the Holy Spirit.

So, let us travel first back in time to the Psalms and then pull it together with some of the teachings of Jesus and the letters of Paul. Therein we will find the keys to Overcome Depression Now through applying trust in the Word of God.

Looking at the Psalms of David and of the Sons of Korah

The sons of Korah are mentioned as being the gatekeepers of the tabernacle and as a group who sings in praise to God.

Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brethren, from his father’s house, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, gatekeepers of the tabernacle. Their fathers had been keepers of the entrance to the camp of the Lord. I Chronicles 9:10

¹⁸And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. ¹⁹Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high. I Chronicles 20 (NKJV)

Psalm 42 and 43 both deal with depression and how to overcome depression now, even though in the darkest depth of sorrow. Some commentaries say that the Sons of Korah here meant they were the singers and not the writers. Others say it is their writing. Among the ones who believe it to be written by the Sons of Korah, some say they were written when in exile with David after his son Absalom tried to overthrow David’s reign. He had to run so some believe it was then. Others say they were written as they went into exile in Babylon. Really, it does not matter which is true. What we do know is this is an instruction in what to do with depression.

A Brief History of God’s Grace

If you remember who Korah is, you might wonder about the sons of Korah being the entrusted leaders who faithfully serve God. Sons of Korah do not refer to immediate sons, rather the lineage of Korah. Just as Jesus can be called the Son of David because of the lineage directly back to him through both Mary and Joseph, His stepfather.

Well as a reminder in Numbers 16, Korah threatened Moses’ authority. Then God opened the earth swallowed up Korah and his followers. But God did not destroy his lineage. Instead, Numbers 26 tells us:

¹¹Nevertheless the children of Korah did not die.

Indeed, God’s grace covered them and lead them to a special place of service for Him in worship. So, anyone worried about “generational sin” blocking you for Jesus, it just ain’t so.

Deep In the Depths of Depression, but.

As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.
²My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
³My tears have been my food day and night,
While they continually say to me,
“Where is your God?” Psalm 42

Oh, the depth of depression he is speaking of here. My tears have been my food day and night. Life has become unbearable and all around him mock him for believing God cares. they mock him and they mock God. Or they even believe God abandoned him for evil he has done. How quick even Christians condemn others for their hardships! Whatever, he feels alone. but this one thing—he is seeking God with all his might; therefore, God’s answer will be forthcoming. Even if God tarries as He did with Daniel’s agonizing prayer, His answer is coming.

So, Key one to Overcome Depression Now is to look up.

²⁵“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; ²⁶men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ²⁷Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. ²⁸Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” Luke 21

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, ²looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12

Remembering How It Was

⁴When I remember these things,
I pour out my soul within me.
For I used to go with the multitude;
I went with them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise,
With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.

Psalm 42

I used to be happy. Remembering a former time of joy is sometimes restorative. Only if you remember the steps that drew you closer to God that helped. Yet usually, this yonder year reflection only drives you deeper down. In this case he is remembering a time when his joy was found in the house of God with others around him. His sense of solitude only digs him deeper into despair. Or maybe it was the same multitude that now rejected him. Was his joy from the crowd or truly from worshipping God.

When trials surround us, it is natural to remember a former time and think it was better then. How easily we forget the things that weighed us down then. Looking back, I wish I had the stamina, the endurance, and what I remember as greater patience. Although, those around me then, might have thought differently.

Key #2: Do Not Focus on Yesterday, Look forward to the Hope tomorrow

²²Blessed are you when the people hate you, and when they exclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man. ²³Rejoice on that day and jump for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For their fathers used to treat the prophets the same way. Luke 6 (NASB)

⁷But as for me, I will be on the watch for the Lord;
I will wait for the God of my salvation.
My God will hear me.
⁸Do not rejoice over me, enemy of mine.
Though I fall I will rise;
Though I live in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.

⁹I will endure the rage of the Lord
Because I have sinned against Him,
Until He pleads my case and executes justice for me.
He will bring me out to the light,
And I will look at His righteousness. Micah 7 NASB

I may go through trials here on this earth. So, what! I deserve no less if I were to stand on my own righteousness. But I do not. I stand by His righteousness and his alone.

¹³Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, ¹⁴I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3 (NKJV)

“Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Blood and righteousness” Edward Mote[1]

Preaching to Yourself

⁵Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
For the help of His countenance. Psalm 42 NKJV

And so, he began to preach to himself. Soul, why are you cast down? You know the truth of God. What makes you think any different than He is good and has always been good?

Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones was a medical doctor who left a very lucrative practice to become a pastor. He authored a book on Spiritual Depression that is outstanding and beneficial to all. He did make this observation.

Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment you wake up in the morning. You have not originated them but they are talking to you, they bring back the problems of yesterday, etc. Somebody is talking. Who is talking to you? Your self is talking to you. Now this man’s treatment [in Psalm 42] was this: instead of allowing this self to talk to him, he starts talking to himself. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” he asks. His soul had been depressing him, crushing him. So, he stands up and says, “Self, listen for moment, I will speak to you.”

Key #3 to Overcome Depression Now-Stop Listening to Yourself and preach the Gospel to yourself.

⁵Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. ⁶Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”⁷And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”⁸But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? ⁹Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? ¹⁰Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up? ¹¹How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? —but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Matthew 16

So quickly they became disturbed, looking to figure out their own error and laying guilt upon themselves. The truth their guilt was not remembering all that Jesus had done. They were so worried they could not understand the truth Jesus was speaking. He rebuked them, but also told them what they should have done was preach to themselves from all he had done. Then they would have trusted the power of the word. Also, they would understand His teaching.

Every time I forget, I find I must preach to myself Romans 8 and Ephesians 1-3. Those are my go-to sermons to myself. They guide my heart to overcome depression. Sometimes I have to repeat these to myself multiple times a day, but then my sorrow fades away. His joy enters my soul and strength returns.

Romans 8–Words to Overcome Depression of the Soul

8 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus,⁸For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. ¹⁹For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God….²⁸And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. ²⁹For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. ³⁰Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified….

³⁷Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. ³⁸For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, ³⁹nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8 NKJV

Ephesians- Know Who You Are in Christ to Overcome Depression

³Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, ⁴just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, ⁵having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, ⁶to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He ^[^a^]made us accepted in the Beloved….¹¹In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will. Ephesians 1

⁴But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, ⁵even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), ⁶and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, ⁷that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2

²⁰Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, ²¹to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3 (NKJV)

Take Your Eyes Off You and Place on Him to Overcome Depression

I will say to God my Rock,
“Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
¹⁰As with a breaking of my bones,
My enemies reproach me,
While they say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”

¹¹Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God. Psalm 42 NKJV

As the psalmist moves through this deep depression, he realizes that the only one who can fix it is God. He then turns to talk to God once more. Now he repeats his words to God, openly and honestly telling him his feelings of abandonment. Only God can mend his broken heart and take charge over his mind. Only God can provide all that is needed to overcome depression.

Key #4 to Overcome Depression Now Plead Your Cause to Jesus

Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. ²⁴Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. John 16 (NKJV)

⁴Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say, rejoice!⁵Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.⁶Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; ⁷and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4 NKJV

Then the Psalmist Became Bolder as his depression turned to joy

43 Vindicate me, O God,
And plead my cause against an ungodly nation;
Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!
²For You are the God of my strength;
Why do You cast me off?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

³Oh, send out Your light and Your truth!
Let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your holy hill
And to Your tabernacle.
⁴Then I will go to the altar of God,
To God my exceeding joy;
And on the harp I will praise You,
O God, my God.

⁵Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God. PSALM 43 (NKJV)

He has moved his focus from himself and onto God. It is as if the last quote was almost with a mocking tone to his soul. “Why are you cast down? Really what are you thinking? Hope in God.

It is said Martin Luther was going about at one time with a long and sad face. His wife came out wearing all black. He asked her whose funeral she was going to. She replied, well God must have died if you have such a sad countenance. So, he wrote in huge letters a sign. God is Alive and placed it in his study, so it was a reminder everyday of that truth.

Key #5: To Overcome Depression Now—take charge of your mind

John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Jesus promised us a helper who can change the thoughts in our head.

⁸Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.⁹Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. Philippians 4 NKJV

How to Triumph in a Crazy World through Jesus Found in David’s Sorrow

In You, O Lord, I have taken refuge;
Let me never be ashamed;
In Your righteousness deliver me.
2 Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly;
Be to me a rock of strength,
A stronghold to save me.
3 For You are my rock and my fortress;
For Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me…
14 as for me, I trust in You, O Lord,
I say, “You are my God.”

Psalm 31

David had been a very faithful shepherd boy, content in the hills with his sheep and God. The forgotten uninvited one, as when Samuel came to his father to anoint a new King of Israel. Though he was sent to King Saul’s court to sing soothing songs and to become his armor bearer, he was uninvited to the battle with Goliath. None of this seemed to disturb him. He held the key to triumph in a crazy world. His world was about to turn even further upside down. However, even in the darkest hours, he sought God for his counsel.

Anointed King, he was exiled for many years before his time to sit on the throne would finally come. King Saul out of jealousy wanted David dead. But David knew his times were in God’s hands. Just as Jesus knew, the fullness of time remains in the Father’s hands. Only the Father knows the hour when Jesus will receive once more the deed to this earth on which we reside.

²⁹“But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ³⁰And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. …³⁶“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. Matthew 24

Through Many Sorrows

David would face years of great sorrows before he would assume his role as King. Jesus came to earth and faced many sorrows. He paid the price that sin demands to purchase back this broken world. Yet, He waits until the fullness of time when the Father proclaims “Now go get your bride”. That proclamation will begin the final stages until Jesus takes His throne in Jerusalem for 1000 years. David waited patiently to take his throne as so does Jesus wait to take His Earthly throne.

How Do We Triumph in A Crazy World?

Understand the truth “My times are in Your Hands Lord”

Seek His Face

Obey His Word and Command

Focus on Things Above

Accept Grief and Sorrow Are Part of a Broken World

Never Forget—Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life

Hold Fast to His Promises

There you have it. But how do we do this? What about David’s journey points us to Jesus? And how do we incorporate these truths into our lives? That is the beauty of God providing for us all the truths of the Old Testament so we might understand in practical terms how. It is also how centuries ago, God told us the means of therapy we needed to face all kinds of trials from grief to burn out. So, let us delve in a little deeper into each of these seven facets on how to triumph.

Triumph by Understanding “My times are in Your Hands Lord”

Not only my life and death, but my times. When I am to rise and when in this world I will fall are in your hands. It has been His guiding hand each step of the way. David knew this. That is why he did not move forward to take his throne before God deemed it so. Although he had already been anointed, he would wait until God’s timing to take his throne.

⁸Then Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand; now therefore, please let me strike him with the spear to the ground with one stroke, and I will not ^[^d^]strike him the second time.” ⁹But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be without guilt?” ¹⁰David also said, “As the Lord lives, surely the Lord will strike him, or his day will come that he dies, or he will go down into battle and perish. ¹¹The Lord forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the Lord’s anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head and the jug of water and let us go.” I Samuel 25

Jesus Also Placed in times into the Father’s Hand

Jesus while in human flesh, also awaited the timing of the Father. He referred to His time not yet being and other times that the hour was coming when He would give His life a ransom. He had prayed in the Garden of
Gethsemane, “Not my will, but thine be done.” and then from the cross.

“It is finished!” John 19:30 ⁴⁶And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Luke 23:46

This being the same as did David cry out in Psalm 31:5, only for David his only means of saying that was because he had been ransomed from his sin by God. Looking forward to that day on the cross when Jesus would proclaim it.

Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me, O Lord, God of truth. Psalm 31:5

Whether in life or death I too must cry out, “My times are in Your hands Lord.”

Sad to say, that is also true of each person who fall into the hands of an angry God for their disbelief. But while there is breath in each body, God is granting grace for today. They still have the chance to believe in Jesus, repent and be made whole. Oh, sinner let us heed the warning and saint be comforted in these words, “My time is in His Sovereign Hands of Grace. His plans are what is best for me, even when I cannot see.

Seek His Face to Triumph

⁷Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice,
And be gracious to me and answer me.
⁸When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You,
“Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.”
⁹Do not hide Your face from me,
Do not turn Your servant away in anger;
You have been my help;
Do not abandon me nor forsake me,
O God of my salvation!…
¹³I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.
¹⁴Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord. Psalm 27

And these were the words of Jesus.

³⁰“I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me….³⁹You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; ⁴⁰and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. ⁴¹I do not receive glory from men; ⁴²but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. ⁴³I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. ⁴⁴How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?

Oh, that we would seek God with all our hearts, minds, and strength. Then we would triumph in life and death.

To Triumph Obey His Word and Command

O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.

¹⁶¹Princes persecute me without cause,

But my heart stands in awe of Your words.

¹⁶²I rejoice at Your word,

As one who finds great spoil.

¹⁶³I hate and despise falsehood,

But I love Your law.

¹⁶⁴Seven times a day I praise You,

Because of Your righteous ordinances.

¹⁶⁵Those who love Your law have great peace,

And nothing causes them to stumble.

¹⁶⁶I hope for Your salvation, O Lord,

And do Your commandments.

¹⁶⁷My soul keeps Your testimonies,

And I love them exceedingly.

Psalm 119: 97, 161-167

And Jesus

³⁵Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. ³⁶But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. ³⁷All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. ³⁸For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

³⁹This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing but raise it up on the last day. ⁴⁰For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” John 6

⁵Have this attitude in yourselves, which was also in Christ Jesus, ⁶who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, ⁷but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. ⁸Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. ⁹For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, ¹⁰so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, ¹¹and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Focus on Things Above and There in Triumph

David knew that if he looked around him all he would see was sorrow. Therefore, he knew to keep his focus on God above. That was the only hope to settle his weary heart and to gain strength to march on.

I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;

From where shall my help come?

When Peter turned his eyes to this world, losing the focus of heaven, Jesus said.

²¹From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. ²²Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” ²³But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” Matthew 16

Or as Paul reminds us.

Therefore, if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. ²Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. ³For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. ⁴When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Colossians 3

Triumph means I Accept Grief and Sorrow Are Part of a Broken World

David understood grief. He was running for his life in exile and this after being anointed to be the successor, King. Sorrow was deep in his heart. Yet he trusted in God to be with him.

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;
My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul, and my body also.
¹⁰For my life is spent with sorrow
And my years with sighing;
My strength has failed because of my iniquity,
And my body has wasted away.
¹¹Because of all my adversaries, I have become a reproach,
Especially to my neighbors,
And an object of dread to my acquaintances;
Those who see me in the street flee from me.
¹²I am forgotten as a dead man, out of mind;
I am like a broken vessel.
¹³For I have heard the slander of many,
Terror is on every side;
While they took counsel together against me,
They schemed to take away my life.

¹⁴But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord,
I say, “You are my God.”…
¹⁹How great is Your goodness,
Which You have stored up for those who fear You,…
²¹Blessed be the Lord,
For He has made marvelous His lovingkindness to me in a besieged city.
²²As for me, I said in my alarm,
“I am cut off from before Your eyes”;
Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications
When I cried to You.

²³O love the Lord, all you His godly ones!
The Lord preserves the faithful
And fully recompenses the proud doer.
²⁴Be strong and let your heart take courage,
All you who hope in the Lord.

And concerning Jesus we know

³He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

⁴Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted. Isaiah 53

Never Forget—Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life

God established a covenant with David that his kingdom would become an everlasting kingdom. David understood that through him would come the Savior, the eternal King. For this he was humbled.

⁸“Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel. ⁹I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth. ¹⁰I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly, ¹¹even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you.

¹²When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. ¹⁴I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, ¹⁵but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. ¹⁶Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” ¹⁷In accordance with all these words and all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

¹⁸Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? ¹⁹And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord God, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the ^[^g^]custom of man, O Lord God. ²⁰Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord God! ²¹For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know. ²²For this reason You are great, O Lord God; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

We too must remember that we are saved by grace alone. Every gift is a gift of grace, undeserved by my feeble hands. How quickly does my heart turn to selfishness, anger, pride? Oh, that I always realize that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Only in Him can I find a hope of righteousness, yet he gave it to me anyway.

Hold Fast to His Promises to Triumph

All His promises are true, for that reason I have hope. David held fast to the promises of God throughout all the years of his running. Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises from Genesis through revelation.

The entirety of Your word is truth,

And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever. Psalm 119:160 (KJV)

Therefore

²³Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; ²⁴and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, ²⁵not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. Hebrews 10

Forever King Jesus, Delighted in by God Almighty. Do You Really Know This?

16 For we did not follow cleverly concocted fables when we made known to you the power and return of our Lord Jesus Christ; no, we were eyewitnesses of his grandeur. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory: “This is my dear Son, in whom I am delighted. 18 When this voice was conveyed from heaven, we ourselves heard it, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 Moreover, we possess the prophetic word as an altogether reliable thing. 2 Peter 1 (NET)

“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. ..13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God…16 on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written: “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” Revelation 19:6, 13,16 (NASB)

Last week we saw God moving forward His plan of redemption. This despite the people’s disobedience and lack of faith. Evil reigned in the hearts of men. Particularly, the evil of self-absorption and pride—everyone doing what was right in his own eyes. While at the same time believing themselves invincible because they belonged to God. Yet, there were always the remnant of faithful followers of God. We saw this in Boaz, who represented Christ as the kinsman redeemer. Now as we turn to the book of I Samuel, again we see the faithfulness of God who will one day present His Forever King Jesus. God Almighty Delights in His Son. One day He will anoint Jesus as Forever King over all the earth. Until that day, we are assured God will appoint His chosen, redeemed to be the lights into a dark world, proclaiming the salvation of the Lord.

We must take heart from Ruth, Boaz, Samuel, Jonathan, and King David. They foreshadow our Forever King Jesus. Furthermore, they stand as proof historical of the faithfulness of God. We can rely on His word and His truth. Amazingly God weaves the proof of Himself throughout history with exactness. The children of Israel lived in Egypt for 400 years—God although working His plan forward, remained silent until He sent Moses to take them out of captivity. For 400 years the people were ruled by judges. God protected them despite their lackadaisical faith. He spoke but only to a few through these times. Then comes Samuel on the scene who would prove to be faithful judge, prophet, priest, and a picture of Jesus.

Samuel, foreshadowing of Our Forever King Jesus

Samuel’s is the story of how sorrow blended with faith worked perfectly into the plan of salvation for the world. Hannah was barren. For this she mourned greatly. Yet, her only hope was to continue to pray and petition the Lord for a child. It was out of her depth of sorrow that Hannah prayed fervently.

she was in bitterness of soul and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish. ¹¹Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head. 1 Samuel 1: (NKJV)

Then miraculously God opened her womb. Samuel’s birth was a miracle. Yet had it not been for her sorrow, would Hannah have offered her firstborn to the Lord? Mary also gave birth miraculously—albeit she was a virgin and conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit. Still as a young, betrothed female pregnant before the wedding, she was ostracized and criticized as well. Hers would be a road of blessings and sorrows mixed. Hannah suffered as well. Both women vowed to God their faithfulness in this matter. Both later had more children as well. Hannah and Mary both have beautiful songs of praise to God recorded in scripture.

A Call To Service

Now the boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation. ²And it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place, and when his eyes had begun to grow so dim that he could not see, ³and before the lamp of God went out in the tabernacle of the Lord where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down, ⁴that the Lord called Samuel. And he answered, “Here I am!” ⁵So he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” I Samuel 3 (NKJV).

These scriptures are so packed with information. Notice: the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation. This due to the corruption of the people’s hearts. Also, note that the word says, Eli was going blind. This in reference to both his physical sight and his spiritual sight. He had not heeded God’s warnings concerning His sons.

⁶Then the Lord called yet again, “Samuel!” So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” He answered, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” ⁷(Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, nor was the word of the Lord yet revealed to him.)⁸And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. So he arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you did call me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy. ⁹Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.’” So, Samuel went and lay down in his place.¹⁰Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.” I Samuel 3 (NKJV).

Samuel Called to Proclaim Judgement

The Sons of ELI were very corrupt. They were priests by name only, like many heretical church leaders. They “required sexual relations be provided by the women who came to sacrifice” and, also stole money and provision from the people. Eli had failed to judge them and only said, “Do Not Do that “. He let them continue in their posts as priests. They did not know or honor God.

Eli even ignored the warnings given him concerning them. God then chose a new priest, Samuel and pronounced judgement on Eli and his sons. These were God’s first words to Samuel.

¹¹Then the Lord said to Samuel: “Behold, I will do something in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. ¹²In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. ¹³For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them. ¹⁴And therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”¹⁵So Samuel lay down until morning, and opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the vision. I Samuel 3 (NKJV)

Samuel loved Eli, so it must have been hard to pronounce this judgment. Jesus loves the world but will have to pronounce judgement on all who reject His gift of salvation.

¹⁸Then Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he (ELI) said, “It is the Lord. Let Him do what seems good to Him.” I Samuel 3 (NKJV).

God Defends His Glory as Forever King

A big battle then began between the Philistines and the Israelites. As a ploy to try to win, the Ark of the Covenant was brought out to the battleground accompanied by the sons of Eli. Again, despite failing to worship God they wanted to use His power to save themselves by just placing the Ark there. The philistines won the battle, killed the sons of Eli, and took the Ark of the Covenant back to their land. Eli heard and fell over dead. His daughter in law cried out in childbirth, ““The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”. She named her son Ichabod meaning inglorious.

The Philistines took the Ark of the Covenant and placed it in front of the Statue of Dagon (their fish god). When they left, the statue fell face down before the Ark. They stood it up again.

⁴And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the threshold; only Dagon’s torso was left of it. ⁵Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day. ⁶But the hand of the Lord was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and He ravaged them and struck them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. I Samuel 5 (NKJV)

God was quite capable to defend His Own Glory against every false witness against His name. The Philistines move the Ark several times; however, finally sent it back to Israel laden with Golden treasures as gifts. God does not need us, but by Grace shares His glory with us.

A King is Named for Israel As They Reject God’s Rule

¹³So the Philistines were subdued, and they did not come anymore into the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. ¹⁴Then the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; and Israel recovered its territory from the hands of the Philistines. Also there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

¹⁵And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. ¹⁶He went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places. ¹⁷But he always returned to Ramah, for his home was there. There he judged Israel, and there he built an altar to the Lord. I Samuel 7 (NKJV)

But when Samuel was old and his sons did not follow God as they should, the people began to demand a King like all the other nations. God told Samuel to heed their desires and first God gave them Saul. But Saul would not follow God with all his heart. He let pride and power overtake him. So, God told Samuel to choose David and anoint him to be the next King. It would be years of struggles before he was to take over the throne. In those years God molded and trained David to be the King after His Own heart and to be the line from which His Son would be born one day. The Forever King Jesus would be born to suffer and to die that all who accept Him as Lord and Savior might be saved eternally to be with Him.

As God prepared David to be the next king, He placed David inside the King’s Court as musician to King Saul. While there he also learned to be the armor bearer. It was through this training that David also knew Jonathan. Jonathan loved David with a perfect love of friendship that surpassed that of most loves. Jonathan was willing to lay down his life to defend David. He knew that it was David God had chosen to be the next King. However, Jonathan did not become envious or wish it not to be. That meant he was willing to lay aside his throne because he loved David that much.

Jesus also laid aside His throne for a time to come to earth and to bear the weight of the wrath of God against all of sin. He willingly came to die for us. For that reason, He, alone is worthy to open the scrolls and take possession of the deed to earth. To do so our Forever King, Jesus must open the seals and pour out judgement upon the earth, cleansing it from the evil. Thankfully, we will be raptured before this judgement begins according to the scripture.

The Forever King Jesus in the New Heaven and New Earth

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. ²In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. ³And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. ⁴They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. ⁵There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever. Revelation 22

Let Him Come Quickly

¹²“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. ¹³I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”

¹⁴Blessed are those who ^[^g^]do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter through the gates into the city. ¹⁵But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.

¹⁶“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”

¹⁷And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.

²⁰He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.”

How do I really know Jesus is Our Joyous Kinsman Redeemer?

“Fear not, for you will not be put to shame;

And do not feel humiliated, for you will not be disgraced;

But you will forget the shame of your youth,

And the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.

5 “For your husband is your Maker,

Whose name is the Lord of hosts;

And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,

Who is called the God of all the earth.

6 “For the Lord has called you,

Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit,

Isaiah 54 (NASB)

When Joshua died, the people declared they would be faithful to God. That did not happen. Very quickly they all began to do what was right in their own eyes. They included God, more as a side thought, believing themselves protected by Him regardless of their idolatrous lifestyles. God, on the other hand remained faithful to all His Promises. From the beginning, He promised a Joyous Kinsman Redeemer for fallen humanity. He told Eve that her seed would crush the head of serpent. In doing so, Jesus purchased the deed of earth with His own blood. But I am getting ahead of the story. So let us step back to look at the book of Judges and then Ruth.

The book of Judges is a sad and dark book in the Bible. It is filled with failures. God chooses judges to guide the people. However, all through the book of judges even the judges become further and further flawed. Not until Samuel do you find a judge who truly follows God’s commands with all their heart. Gideon for a while was a bright star. But before his death he made a golden ephod, telling the people to follow only God to be their King. But alas, they worshipped the golden object instead.

Samson was a mess, but still ultimately did God’s will. Even if only after losing everything. Judges shows God’s faithfulness to the nation regardless of the people. It also shows how God could use the least of us to accomplish His will with even a thread of faith.

How Low Can a People Go?

Still in the end, the book ends with a true picture of how debauchery had thrived within the nation. A Levite priest gives his concubine to a group of sexual perverts from the tribe of Benjamin to save himself from these men’s sexual assault. They sexually abuse her to her death. He then cuts her body into pieces and sends it to the other tribes, inciting a civil war. Then the book of judges ends with this.

²⁵In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. Judges 21: 25 (NASB)

John MacArthur comments, “Judges 17-21 vividly demonstrates how bizarre and deep sin can become when people throw off the authority of God…This was an appropriate, but tragic conclusion to a bleak period of Israelite history”¹

They had failed to heed the warnings in Deuteronomy. Soon God would appoint Samuel as the final judge through whom He would give the people Kings—both good and bad. That is the case with human Kings. Yet, it is through the line of King David that the Joyous Kinsmen Redeemer for the nation and for the gentiles would be born. Only He could truly save and redeem the earth. How appropriate then that during the days of the judges, we are introduced to Ruth.

Trials to Test the Faith Leading to God’s Providence

Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons. ²The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi; and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. Now they entered the land of Moab and remained there. Ruth 1 (NASB)

So, rather than trust God, Elimelech took his family to the land of Moab and settled in. He named his sons Mahlon (meaning sickly) and Chiliion (pining or wasting away). Odd names perhaps depicting their own spiritual state at the time. We do not know a lot about Naomi’s faith at the time. However, she dutifully followed her husband.

³Then Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. ⁴They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. And they lived there about ten years. ⁵Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and the woman was bereft of her two children and her husband.

Naomi decides to return to the land of Judah. Once might surmise that throughout the 10 years, she had demonstrated a faith in God despite her husband’s lack thereof. I say that because Ruth chooses to believe in Naomi’s God and go with her.

Tragedy Turns to Triumph

Despite all the darkness seen in the book of Judges, we are presented with an epic love story. Ruth chooses to follow Naomi, out of loving devotion to her.

¹⁶But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. ¹⁷Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus, may the Lord do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me.” Ruth 1 (NASB)

On her return, she first said that God had dealt bitterly with her. Yet, little did she realize, God was about to make her infamous. His blessings would surpass anything He had taken from her. It would even surpass her wildest imaginations as through a joyous kinsman redeemer, she would become heiress to the world’s joyous kinsman redeemer.

Once in the land of Judah, they had no money and no means of support. Ruth asks to go with the poor and glean from the fields behind the others. God’s law had included a provision to provide for the poor and the stranger.

⁹‘Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. ¹⁰Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 19 (NASB)

So, willingly, Ruth went out to walk behind the workers and gather enough for she and Naomi.

An Act of God—She Meets Her Joyous Kinsman Redeemer

²And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after one in whose sight I may find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” ³So she departed and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers; and she happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech. ⁴Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem and said to the reapers, “May the Lord be with you.” And they said to him, “May the Lord bless you.” ⁵Then Boaz said to his servant who was in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?” ⁶The servant in charge of the reapers replied, “She is the young Moabite woman who returned with Naomi from the land of Moab. ⁷And she said, ‘Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.’ Thus, she came and has remained from the morning until now; she has been sitting in the house for a little while.”

She happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz. He happened to come from Bethlehem at that same time. And he realized who she was and what she had done. He saw her true beauty. Furthermore, he addressed her as daughter suggesting he was much older than she. Yet, he had no son of his own. He was very wealthy and was related to Elimilech and therefore could redeem Abimelech’s land.

He Saw Her and Had Compassion on her.

⁸Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen carefully, my daughter. Do not go to glean in another field; furthermore, do not go on from this one, but stay here with my maids. ⁹Let your eyes be on the field which they reap and go after them. Indeed, I have commanded the servants not to touch you. When you are thirsty, go to the water jars and drink from what the servants draw.” ¹⁰Then she fell on her face, bowing to the ground and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your sight that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?”

¹¹Boaz replied to her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband has been fully reported to me, and how you left your father and your mother and the land of your birth and came to a people that you did not previously know. ¹²May the Lord reward your work, and your wages be full from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge.” ¹³Then she said, “I have found favor in your sight, my lord, for you have comforted me and indeed have spoken kindly to your maidservant, though I am not like one of your maidservants.”

Also note his acts of kindness to provide for her and to protect her from harm. Certainly, in a time when many did whatever they thought right, a Moabite woman could have been preyed upon. Much like how Jesus sees you and me.

Ruth Seeks Her Joyous Kinsman Redeemer

God Wrote in Leviticus 25

²³‘The land, moreover, shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are but aliens and sojourners with Me. ²⁴Thus for every piece of your property, you are to provide for the redemption of the land.

²⁵‘If a fellow countryman of yours becomes so poor he has to sell part of his property, then his nearest kinsman is to come and buy back what his relative has sold.

^48…One of his brothers may redeem him, ⁴⁹or his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or one of his blood relatives from his family may redeem him

These laws were to protect the land, the heritage of the people, and provide a way of continuing the lineage of even the deceased.

A Proposal of Sorts by Ruth

Ruth must have thought this man kind, but she was not aware of who he was until she told Naomi of him. Can you imagine? Naomi believed all was lost and Ruth came to tell her of Boaz. She must have said, “Boaz? You met Boaz? He is a relative and can be your kinsman redeemer.”

So, Ruth does as Naomi told her. She goes to the threshing floor and lays down at the feet of Boaz. When he awoke, she asked him to redeem her. He said he would if the nearer kinsman did not.

Proposal Accepted with Glee

Listen to these his words toward her:

⁸It happened in the middle of the night that the man was startled and bent forward; and behold, a woman was lying at his feet. ⁹He said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Ruth your maid. So spread your covering over your maid, for you are a close relative.” ¹⁰Then he said, “May you be blessed of the Lord, my daughter. You have shown your last kindness to be better than the first by not going after young men, whether poor or rich. ¹¹Now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you whatever you ask, for all my people in the city know that you are a woman of excellence. ¹²Now it is true I am a close relative; however, there is a relative closer than I. ¹³Remain this night, and when morning comes, if he will redeem you, good; let him redeem you. But if he does not wish to redeem you, then I will redeem you, as the Lord lives. Lie down until morning.”

The Joyous Kinsman Redeemer Eagerly Completed His Promise

The next morning, he hurried to the square where he offered the land and Ruth to the nearer relative. He declined as he did not want to potentially harm his own inheritance. Happily, then Moab declared.

¹⁰Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.” ¹¹All the people who were in the court, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve wealth in Ephrathah and become famous in Bethlehem. ¹²Moreover, may your house be like the house of Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring which the Lord will give you by this young woman.”

¹³So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her. And the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. ¹⁴Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed is the Lord who has not left you without a redeemer today, and may his name become famous in Israel. ¹⁵May he also be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

The Line of David Began Here

¹⁶Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her lap and became his nurse. ¹⁷The neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi!” So, they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

Boaz a Shadow of Our Joyous Kinsman Redeemer

Three things were needed to be a kinsman redeemer according to the law. 1. Must be a relative of the impoverished or deceased.

2. Must have the means of redeeming them.

3. Must be willing.

In the case of Ruth, both were needed. Not only redeem the land; but the lineage of Abimelech was to be preserved. God chose a gentile Moabite woman to be in the line of Jesus Christ. How fitting. A gentile bride who entered the land of Judah by faith in God and because of love.

The same is true of us. Jesus is Our Joyous Kinsman Redeemer.

When I look at Boaz, I think, you remind me of somebody named Jesus. Because what he does with Ruth and with this land is a picture of what Jesus Christ will do. The Goel, the kinsman redeemer, is one of the clearest pictures of Jesus in the Bible– a bridegroom who buys a Gentile bride and prepares that Gentile to be his wife.

The Gentile bride is the church. Jesus gave a parable in which he said, the kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid, and for the joy over it, he goes and sells all that he has, and he buys the field. Real quickly, fast forward to the ultimate real estate transaction in history, Revelation chapter 5.

You don’t have to turn there, but in Revelation chapter 5, John sees the scroll in the right hand of him who sat on the throne, written on the inside and on the outside, sealed with seven seals. And somebody said, who is worthy to take the scroll and then loose the seals? And nobody came forth.

So John said, I wept much. Why did he weep? Because he realized what is being held is the title deed to the Earth– the title deed to the Earth that was lost when Adam gave it away, essentially, at the fall to Satan the usurper, who became the god of this world, the prince of the power of the air. And nobody came forward to redeem it, and so he wept much.

Revelation chapter 5 is what we call– or what you would call, if you’re in the real estate business– the closing, where Jesus, at the end, comes to fully redeem the Earth. He redeemed by his own blood. He is the kinsman who was related– that’s the first qualification– he was related. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

So first qualification, he’s related us. That’s why there was an incarnation. Jesus became a man, flesh, and blood, because now he’s related to us, as the Goel. He was willing to do it– the second qualification. He says, nobody takes my life from me. I lay it down of myself. I have the power to lay it down and take it again. So he was willing to do it.

And third, He was able to do it. He had what it took to pay for it. What did He use for his payment? Blood. Paul said, feed the flock of God, which he purchased with his own blood. Jesus Christ, related, willing, and able, steps forward and takes the scroll from God the Father on the throne.

And that is the picture of what goes on during that tribulation period, and ends when Jesus comes back, to rule and reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lord over the field from which He purchased the bride– the bride of Christ, the church. So yeah, it’s a great story. ..

What’s amazing is that the book of Ruth takes place during the time of the Judges, which were such dark days. And in the midst of such dark days, such a beautiful love story occurs. Here’s the parallel. We live in a dark day and age, but behind the scenes, God is all about preparing a bride– the church.

And everyone who says, yes, Jesus, yes, Lord, I give myself to you, I surrender myself to you, becomes part of that great company– the bride of Christ– comprised of Jew and Gentile– largely Gentile– that he calls out, that become his own, and will enjoy that inheritance forever. Father, as we close this book, we open our hearts to these great truths of a kinsman redeemer, and of the great providence of almighty God.

Lord, you gave, through Your spirit, in this book of Ruth, a picture, a preview in very easy-to-understand form of what is going to take place with a greater transaction at the end of time, When the lion of the tribe of Judah, the Lamb of God slain, steps forward and takes that scroll and unlooses the seals, fulfilling the qualifications, and redeems the world lost at the fall, and buys and redeems the world back to You, Father.

And then Jesus will rule and reign over this creation for 1,000 years of a restored Earth. The field itself will be renewed, and the church, the bride, will be in that field ruling and reigning with Him for 1,000 years. Lord, thank you for this preview of great and coming attractions. And I pray for anyone who doesn’t know You, hasn’t committed their life to You, that they would say yes to Jesus, yes to the Savior, yes to the bridegroom, the lover of their soul.²

Do You Desire the Promised Land of Unconditional Rest and Joy?

Now it came about after many days, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their enemies on every side, and Joshua was old, advanced in years, 2 that Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders and their heads and their judges and their officers, and said to them, “I am old, advanced in years. 3 And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations because of you, for the Lord your God is He who has been fighting for you. Joshua 23 (NASB)

They Lord gave rest to Israel nearing the end of Joshua’s life. After all the trials and the battles, they faced, finally this generation had come into the promised land. God had won every battle that they had trusted Him for. He did all that He promised. But their rest was not an unconditional rest and joy. It was totally conditioned on their loving God and keeping His commandments.

Take diligent heed to yourselves to love the Lord your God. ¹²For if you ever go back and cling to the rest of these nations, these which remain among you, and intermarry with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, ¹³know with certainty that the Lord your God will not continue to drive these nations out from before you; but they will be a snare and a trap to you, and a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which the Lord your God has given you. Joshua 23 (NASB)

Joshua as a Picture of Christ, although only a shadow

1 Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying, ²“Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel. ³Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses. ⁴From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory. ⁵No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life.

Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. ⁶Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. ⁷Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. ⁸This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. ⁹Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

But Concerning Unconditional Rest, it was not Joshua’s to give

And so, Joshua led the people into the promised land. Theirs was not a unconditional rest. Instead, it was conditional and to some extent while we are this side of heaven so is ours. Yet, we are promised a land where we will enjoy unconditional rest and joy. We can experience tastes of that here and now. How? By resting in the arms of Jesus, placing him as 1^st and foremost. Joshua brought the people to a place of rest. However the sustenance for peace and rest meant focusing on God first. We, too, must keep our eyes on Jesus. Unlike Jesus, Joshua could not be the substitutionary sacrifice to keep them faithful or pay their sins for them. Moses had wanted to be, but his own sins stood in the way.

Moses unable to Provide Unconditional Rest

³⁰On the next day Moses said to the people, “You yourselves have committed a great sin. Now I am going up to the Lord, perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” ³¹Then Moses returned to the Lord, and said, “Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a god of gold for themselves. ³²But now, if You will, forgive their sin. And if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!”

³³The Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. ³⁴But go now, lead the people where I told you. Behold, My angel shall go before you; nevertheless, in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.” ³⁵Then the Lord smote the people, because of what they did with the calf which Aaron had made. Exodus 32 (NASB)

But Moses could not promise unconditional rest. Only faith in the Messiah to come. The messiah who has already come and paid the price for our sins. Yet, even when He arrived, they rejected Him. For that reason Paul speaks of His grief.

Paul’s grief for His People

I am telling the truth in Christ. I am not lying. My conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, ²that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. ³For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, ⁴who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, ⁵whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen….

³⁰What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; ³¹but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. ³²Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, Romans 9

Other Times of Rest

Various times during their story, the Jewish nation did experience rest. They did not however, have unconditional rest. One of their greatest times of rest was during the reign of King Solomon. Israel’s influence and domain expanded. Their neighbors both feared and loved them.

⁵⁶“Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that He promised; not one word has failed of all His good promise, which He promised through Moses His servant. ⁵⁷May the Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; may He not leave us or forsake us, ⁵⁸that He may incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances, which He commanded our fathers.

⁵⁹And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before the Lord, be near to the Lord our God day and night, that He may maintain the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel, as each day requires, ⁶⁰so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God; there is no one else. ⁶¹Let your heart therefore be wholly devoted to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.” I Kings 8 NASB

Joshua Also Warned The People

So, take diligent heed to yourselves to love the Lord your God. ¹²For if you ever go back and cling to the rest of these nations, these which remain among you, and intermarry with them, so that you ^[^g^]associate with them and they with you, ¹³know with certainty that the Lord your God will not continue to ^[^h^]drive these nations out from before you; but they will be a snare and a trap to you, and a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which the Lord your God has given you.

¹⁴“Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which the Lord your God spoke concerning you has failed; all have been fulfilled for you, not one of them has failed.

¹⁵It shall come about that just as all the good words which the Lord your God spoke to you have come upon you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the threats, until He has destroyed you from off this good land which the Lord your God has given you. ¹⁶When you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and you will perish quickly from off the good land which He has given you.”

What About Us? Is there Hope of Unconditional Rest?

Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. ²For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.

Did you get that? The difference between receiving unconditional rest and joy is faith. We who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will enter the true promised land of unconditional rest with Him.

³For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,

“As I swore in My wrath,
They shall not enter My rest,”

although His works were finished from the foundation of the world.

The truth of Jesus has always been true since before the foundations of the world. The only way to Him always and forever is through faith, not works.

⁶Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience, ⁷He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before,

“Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

⁸For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. ⁹So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. ¹⁰For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.

How Can We enter unconditional rest?

¹¹Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience. ¹²For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. ¹³And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

¹⁴Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. ¹⁵For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. ¹⁶Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrew 4

It has been and always will be by Grace Alone, through Faith Alone in Jesus Christ Alone.

⁸By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. ⁹By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; ¹⁰for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. ¹¹By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised. ¹²Therefore there was born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

¹³All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. ¹⁴For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. ¹⁵And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. ¹⁶But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

¹⁷By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; ¹⁸it was he to whom it was said, “In Isaac your descendants shall be called.” ¹⁹He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type. ²⁰By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even regarding things to come. ²¹By faith Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff. ²²By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, and gave orders concerning his bones.

²³By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. ²⁴By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, ²⁵choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, ²⁶considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward. ²⁷By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen. ²⁸By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that he who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them. ²⁹By faith they passed through the Red Sea as though they were passing through dry land; and the Egyptians, when they attempted it, were drowned.

³⁰By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. ³¹By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.

So, what does all this mean for us?

There is hope of unconditional rest because of Jesus Christ. We can look forward to the promised land and unconditional rest one day. But what about now? Ah, now we can find our rest in Him. Keep your eyes on Him. Let Jesus be in you, surround you, and give you all that you need. We have his Holy Spirit in us to Guide us into His unconditional rest and joy
