But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom[a] you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:14-17 (ESV)
We live in a world that would tell us that we should lay aside our Bibles as antiquated and not able to fit within our modern society. We are asked to compromise and worry so much more about “the feelings” of others. We are told that we must lay aside any absolutes for the sake of being “politically correct”. The same was certainly true in Paul’s day as well. Throughout the ages of time God has preserved and protected that word which was His Word to the people. No other book written has that power. I may rely upon study and prayer to write; but, my words are merely that–my words. The only truth that cannot be altered is God’s own words as were given to specific men chosen by God to write His word and preserved by God throughout the ages.
For no prophecy recorded in Scripture was ever thought up by the prophet himself. It was the Holy Spirit within these godly men who gave them true messages from God. 2 Peter 1:20 (TLB)
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. Proverbs 30:5-6
Paul is telling Timothy not to rely on what men say; but, to remember and stand firm on all the scripture. He tells Timothy that the Sacred Writings which are now our Old Testament were there to point toward the true power of the Word–Jesus Christ.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not…… And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:1-5,14
The Bible reveals to us God in all His Glory. It reveals to us His righteousness, His perfect Justice, His provision, His love and His Grace toward man. No part of scripture is there without it being profitable to our gaining knowledge of who He is. The Scripture reveal His Heart to us. Then, in fullness of time and at the exact moment as prophesied, Jesus came. God’s Word of Redemption became flesh that we might behold His Glorious Grace and Truth as Jesus walked upon this earth. Then, Jesus Christ died upon the cross providing the only means of salvation to a rebellious, self-exalting humanity. He paid the price for my sin and then on the third day rose from the grave victorious, so that all who would believe in Him might be saved—born spiritually new into the family of God.
So, Paul urges Timothy, “DO NOT LET GO OF TRUTH!” We must not allow society to draw us away from truth we find in the Word of God. Neither can we allow our own human desires to draw us away from the truth of the scripture.
The truth of how to live our life of faith can be found in the word of God. We must write His truths upon our heart. David wrote eloquently of this throughout Psalm 119. Let me give you these two excerpts to consider
Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes;
and I will keep it to the end.[f]
Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
and observe it with my whole heart.
Lead me in the path of your commandments,
for I delight in it.
Incline my heart to your testimonies,
and not to selfish gain!
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
and give me life in your ways…. Psalm 119:33-37 (ESV)
After asking God to show him how to live, then David proclaimed for us how to grow in the word of God.
Oh how I love your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,
for it is ever with me.
How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:97-98,103 (ESV)
Do you want to be wise, equipped to face every trial of life, and filled with steadfast joy? Then, begin each day studying God’s Word. Therein lies the power to rise above every tribulation that may come your way.
