Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen. 2 Peter 3:17-18
Oh, how sweet a sound to be called the beloved of Jesus Christ! That we might as His beloved ever keep our focus upon Him, His Grace and to forever seek to know Him more. It is so easy to lose sight of Him as we journey through this world. We see the evil forces surrounding us. People filled with pride, hate and disdain for the precious name of our Savior. There are the radical forces in this world whose desire is to destroy all who would profess the name of Jesus. There are those who in the name of “love” hate any who love the commandments of God. Others so filled with love and worry about their own selfish “feelings” that they hate truth.
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. John 3:19-21
Here in the United States we have those who would burn the Flag in rebellion, when the Flag is the very symbol of that freedom which allows their voice; while so many in the world are forced to hide from real terror. We have others who scream that our voting machines have undergone some cyber-attack when they are not even connected to the internet; with no logic, only inciting of fear, anger, and division. We do not know with so many opinions of self-exalting people who love to hear themselves, what is even true in the news broadcasts. Where can we find truth anymore? Even closer to each of us are our own fears, worries and concerns. Whether that be loneliness, feelings of rejection, illness, pain, despair, financial distress, or trials at work. All too often, we see so much evil around us and are pulled off balance. We lose the steadfastness of our faith, our hope and certainly joy seems only an impossible dream. So, easily we can be swayed to follow lies and false teachers who sound good; but, only bring more unbalance to our lives as the counterfeit promises crumble around our feet, leaving us more fear filled than when we began. We wander down some path with these false teachers only to find ourselves losing our balance in life.
We might think of this as a modern-day problem; yet, it has been the problem throughout the ages. Peter, was writing to the early church to remind them not to lose focus. He wrote in 2 Peter 3 concerning the truth that this is not our final home. Though we are impatient for the goodness of God to cover the whole earth; God is patient in that He is awaiting one more person who will come to know Christ as Savior. We do not know how many more will be saved this moment or this instant. Had God not waited, You nor I would not have been born and given the wondrous opportunity of being born again into His family!
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness 2 Peter 3:9-11
Because we know this truth, because this is not our final home; don’t let the evil around us detour us from maintaining our focus on the only true light–Jesus Christ. Don’t let the darkness hide that light which is in us who believe in Him. Don’t let us wander off down paths that only cause us to stumble. Let the truth of Jesus Christ guide our lives to be more like Him. Knowing all this, “what manner of persons ought we to be in all holy conversation and godliness.” Yet a little while and Christ will return to establish His Kingdom. Then we shall see Him in all His Glory and Majesty; until, then let us not grow weary in laboring to proclaim His truth. Let us proclaim His Gospel both in word and deed, as we can only do by seeking and savoring Him above all else.
