Joyful Singing in the Midst of Every Circumstance, Really? How?

How is it possible to have joy and hope when there is so much sorrow, pain, suffering and evil that surround us?  We are forever in the midst of a battle from those who would try to steal our joy? We look around us and see people who are hurting. We listen to the news and realize that the days are truly evil. We look within and see the remnants of darkness within our own hearts displayed through moments of pride, jealousy, selfishness, and self-exalting desires.  If we warrior 001continue to look around at the world or look too long at ourselves, we might desire to resign in defeat.  Some in this world seek to search for joy in alcohol, drugs, power, sex, money, relationships, philosophy, and various religions; yet, find themselves sinking deeper into depression and despair fills their hearts.  But what about we who know Christ as our Savior, we who are in Christ?  How do we deal with the paradox that is our life?  How do we hold onto our joy in Christ?

Remember that Paul, knew this all too well.  He spoke of the trials that he had faced with imprisonment, beatings, and a thorn in the flesh. Paul described the Christian life as being "sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things."  (2 Corinthians 6:10)   So let us look at a part of the letter Paul wrote to the Ephesians which describes steps to hold fast to joy.

Ephesians 5: 14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

So how do we battle for Joy?

1.  Awaken from our sleep and recognize there is a battle.  We tend to want to lackadaisically go about our life with blinders on, ignoring that there is a battle which must be fought in this Christian life.  We find ourselves just drifting along and it is no wonder our boat capsizes when the storms come.  We must be aware and prepare by prayer and bible study so that we remain alert.

2.  Arise from the Dead.  Before all else, the question must be answered; do you know Christ as your Savior?  Are you God’s risen, redeemed, Adopted Child by faith in Christ?  John 3: "16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

3.  Walk in the Wisdom provided by God, along the pathway lit by Christ’s light. Ask God for wisdom, clarity and light because He has promised to provide wisdom to all who ask.

4.  Remember the Holy Spirit  indwells you (If you know Christ as your Savior).  The Holy Spirit will fill your hearts to remind you of scriptures, will assist you in prayer, and will ever be about the work of transforming you into the likeness of Christ.

5.  Sing songs of praise to God as you go about your day within your heart.  This I have found to be a lifesaver for me, reminding me to keep my focus on God.  Music and song are such wondrous gifts from God.  When trials present throughout the day, I take a moment to pray and generally I am reminded of a scripture verse and then a song.  The song then plays along in the background of my mind and helps me remain focused on God instead of the circumstance.

6.  Thank God for His Sovereignty and His Sovereign Grace which has promised that "all things (even this) will work together for good to them who love God" Romans 8:28.  If I truly understand that He is Sovereign and I understand His Sovereign Grace then I can be thankful in all things. Question:  Can you tell me a scripture or a song that you hear when trials come?

I found this song this morning, it is easy to remember if you need one.
