Fountains of Wisdom-A Study in Proverbs (Part 22)–A Word to the Wise

Proverbs Chapter 13 once more is an accumulation of individual phrases of wisdom with each verse standing alone or as a whole.  The gathering of wise words which had been spoken by Solomon, words that at that time brought peace among the nations surrounding Israel.  Solomon had chosen well when he chose wisdom and had stood for God with fervent worship at the beginning; although, in the later years he had himself fallen to folly as pride and selfish pursuits overtook him.  The wisdom found in these words still are relevant today.  They were the words of wisdom given to Solomon by God stand firm as the truths we need.

In addition to wisdom, God gave Solomon everything a man might think he could want.  He gave him wealth above all of the earth, fame that spread around the world, honor, peace, and power.  Perhaps it should stand as a warning that when we have everything, we forget our need for God and evil is always lurking at the door to draw us away.

So let us look at some more of the words of Wisdom with their earnest plea to listen.

1.  Wise children will listen to their father’s instructions, instead of ignoring them (verse1)

2. The words flowing from the mouth of the righteous will bring rich rewards while the transgressors bring violence.  “A soft answer will turn away wrath.”  Proverbs 13:2 and 15:1

3. Be careful and think before you speak instead of blurting out whatever first comes to your mind.  (verse 3)

4. The lazy will always have unfulfilled desires while the diligent will have what they need. (verse 4)

5. A righteous man will hate lies and will speak the truth always. (verse 5)

6. God’s righteousness will protect the path of those who seek him with all their heart.  (verse 6)

7. Those who think themselves rich with worldly things may truly be poor while he who is rich with spiritual things is truly wealthy. (verse 7)

8. Financially wealthy people are always at risk of being sued or held for ransom, while the poor are not bothered with that worry.  (verse 8)

9. The righteous do not need to worry about their future.  They will have eternal life with God while the wicked will perish in eternity. (verse 9)

10. Pride leads to arguments and discord while the wise will listen to instruction and learn. (verse 10)

11. Money that comes through get rich quick schemes disappears as quickly as it comes; while, money earned through steady labor of the hands remains and grows. (verse 11)

12. Waiting on a dream can make the heart grow sick and weary while there is great joy when a dream becomes reality. (verse 12)

13. Seek after God’s word, his commandments, his knowledge and his understanding for in Him we may find life, favor, honor, health and His righteousness.  (verses 13 through 18)

14. Righteous will leave an inheritance of righteousness to their generations—teaching their children and grandchildren to follow after God.  Their lives will stand as examples which will guide their families.

Righteousness is found in God.  The only true wisdom is that wisdom from God.  Do you know Him?  Do you seek Him?  He is standing with arms wide open?  Won’t you come?
