As we continue through the Lord’s Prayer, we come to “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Perhaps it is very easy to say, “I trust God. And I want His will to be done in my life and on earth.” However, what if His plan in my life includes that battle with Icancer, the death of a loved one, a divorce I never wanted or planned for? What if my finances are turned upside down or I find myself without a job. Do I really “Thy Will Be Done”?
Furthermore, do I really believe that God IS fully Sovereign. And that He rewards those who diligently seek Him. When life’s storms rage around me, do I believe? Or when I see the spiritual battle raging within our own nation, do I really mean it when I pray, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10)?
When I look at the world around me, filled with injustice, do I truly believe that God has a perfect plan here and now? He has said, “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3). Do I cry forth like Habakkuk, “O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! Even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! (Habakkuk 1:2). However, after his discussion with God, Habakkuk surrendered to God’s will as we see in Habakkuk 3:17-19.
Trusting in His Plan
Or will I surrender fully to His Will, trusting Him and say, Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places (Habakkuk 3:17-19).
Thy Will Be Done
The only other time in the New Testament where these words are spoken are in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus had spoken them in Matthew 6:10 as an example of how to pray. Then, He prayed those very words as He approached the cross. He knew the depth of suffering that He must face when He took all our sins upon the cross. Then, He in great agony prayed to the Father,. “If there be any other way, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt…O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done (Matthew 26: 39, 42).
What about you and I? If God in His Sovereignty sees a world in need of salvation. And if the only way to reach someone is by allowing us to bear a cross. Are we willing to say, “Thy will be done”? Furthermore, if it is through suffering that I might be sanctified to a closer relationship with Him. Am I willing to rest in His love, finding in Him my joy amid the suffering? “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification” (I Thessalonians 4:3)
Therefore, when we pray, “Thy will be done, let us do so with hearts fully surrendered to His will. If it be a cross that lifts me up: then, let me take up my cross daily and follow Him.
