How to Conquer Sin by Grace through Faith

Conquer Sin

Believing and accepting the truth that our Salvation comes by Grace Alone through faith is hard for the human mind.  We want to do something to prove our own worthiness.  All too often, even after accepting God’s Grace at the point of salvation, we fall back to then fighting our battles against the sin in our hearts by our own strength.  Our pride, our desire to raise this “self” higher battles against the very idea that our only hope of living a life “worthy of our calling” is also by Grace alone through Faith.  We could not conquer sin on our own before we were saved, and neither can we conquer sin by our own efforts after we are saved.  To conquer sin, we must rely again on grace through faith; but, how do we do that?  Paul, in writing to the Galatians, said:

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage…For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith” (Galatians 5:1,5).

Paul also wrote:

Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace where we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God (Romans 5: 1-2)

Freed from the Bondage of Sin to Conquer Sin

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit (Romans 8:1-4)

So, the way to conquer sin is through faith, by walking after the Spirit.  Christ’s redemptive work on the cross frees us from the bondage of sin.  No longer are we it’s slave to follow after the things of the flesh.  But how does that work?

Seven Steps to Conquer Sin

  1. Believe the truth, that Christ conquered sin and death; once and for all.
  2. Stop trying to raise “self” again, you cannot conquer sin without Him; but, in Him all things are possible.
  3. Spend time everyday alone with Him, in His word. He will transform your heart from the inside out.  This is key! Surround yourself with Christian music and the word of God.
  4. Be willing to humbly admit, you can’t do this on your own and lean into Him.
  5. Remember, it was grace alone through faith that you were saved, and it is by grace alone through faith that you will conquer sin in your life. You cannot do it alone.
  6. For give yourself, once you have confessed it before God with a broken and contrite heart. God has forgiven you; then, are you so prideful that you think you’re holier than He by not forgiving yourself?
  7. Trust Him to complete the work He started in you.

Of course, all of this is true; only if you know Him as your Savior, Lord, and King.  Have you ever asked Him into your heart?  If so, that same power that rose Jesus from the dead is in you; because, He is in you.  The war against sin in your own life can only be won; through faith.  Your sword is the Word of God.
