How to Really Evaluate the Heart of Your Desires

Desires for comfort, love, intimacy, and belonging are all a part of our humanity.  Our hearts are often driven by desires for relationships, prestigious positions, economic comfort and, in general; happiness.  That, in and of itself is not bad; however, they can become a source of idolatry when those desires take precedence over our desire for God.

Colossians 3:1-3

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

HID IN CHRIST

Because of the redemptive work of Christ on the cross followed by His resurrection, all who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior are then hid in Christ.  The price for our sins (past, present and future) was paid at the cross.  Our penalty and shame were buried with Christ; so, that we might rise again to new life.  Spiritually we are made alive to God. Because we are cloaked in the righteousness of Jesus Christ; our life is hidden with Christ in God.  No longer does God look down from heaven to judge us by our sin.  That, however; is not a license to willfully sin.  Indeed, if I fully understand the depth of Grace and love that God has bestowed on me; then, my heart is compelled to seek Him above all else.

EASIER SAID THAN DONE

Certainly, I recognize that our continuing battles against our fleshly desires are not easy.  Even now, as I say that; I realize this past week I have gotten out of schedule following my surgery.  Despite my desire to post as previously, my desire for rest and comfort took over.  Which in and of itself is certainly not a problem; unless, I let my desire for comfort so invade that I do not return to doing what God has commanded me to do.  Quite the opposite, if my routine of writing and posting becomes the obsession instead of God being the object of my love; even my writing can become a form of idolatry for me.  Anything we do in life, we need to reassess from time to time our own hearts.  Are we doing it for self-exaltation or to exalt Jesus Christ?

We can have started with the right heart out of love for God and somewhere along the way, lose sight of Him.  Because of that risk, it is good sometimes to take a moment to look deep within our own hearts.  Paul, the apostle even tells us of this conflict within his own life.

Romans 7:22-25

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

 DOES THAT MEAN DON’T BATTLE?

Paul was not saying, “Give up” the battle.  In fact, Paul has just outlined in Colossians 3 the truth that we are hid in Christ.  Because of that, we are to consider our flesh dead to sin’s effects.  He tells us to mortify our members.

COLOSSIANS 3:5

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry

Mortify has three distinct meanings we must remember here concerning our fleshly desires.

  1. Subdue
  2. Feel deep shame regarding
  3.  Put to death

All the fleshly desires mentioned here by Paul, he declares to be a form of idolatry. Because the desire to satisfy our flesh becomes paramount to our desire to honor God, the desire becomes an idol.   When we seek to satisfy any earthly desire more than we seek Christ; we sin willfully.

HOW CAN I EVALUATE MY HEART’S DESIRE?

  1. First and foremost, we must learn to name our enemy! All too often we change the wording.  Instead of saying I have sexual desires, I might say I have sexual needs.  That changes the power of that desire in my life.  If I indeed call them needs and for whatever reason, God does not provide me with a husband to meet those needs; then, I rationalize my sin.  I may even become obsessed with finding and fulfilling that need; forgetting, all of God’s warnings.

If instead, I recognize them as desires; I rest assured that God will fulfill my desires as I delight myself in Him.  (Psalm 37:4) When you find ecstasy and joy by worshipping God, the physical desire for sexual intimacy diminishes.  If God does bless you with a husband or wife; certainly, enjoy those pleasures.  Even then, I do think you will find that sexual pleasure only lasts for a moment compared to the fulfilling pleasure of spending time alone with God.

Once named, then what?
  1. Focus on Jesus Christ as Your Greatest Treasure! Take a moment to think about the depth of love, Grace, security, hope and joy that is yours in Christ Jesus.  Then, because of that; seek to know Him better.  Read his word.  Spend time alone with Him in prayer.  Join a church where you are about to hear about Him and talk about Him.  This should not be only when things are going bad.  This should be in both good and bad times.  Remember the old testament?  The people believed and followed God.  God blessed them.  They forgot about God and started worshipping idols.  God warned them.  They failed to repent.  They lost everything.  Then they cried out to God.  God heard them, forgave them and it all started again.  Does that sound like your life?

    FINALLY

  2. Don’t take your eyes off the prize! Your entire lifetime on this earth is but a blink of an eye compared to eternity.  All the fleshly desires of this world are but counterfeit joys compared to the joy and glory of an eternity in His presence.  Would you want to trade Real Eternal Joy for brief counterfeit joys here on earth?

Alive with Hope and Joy (A Song of Praise)

As I explained on Friday’s post; Tuesday I had emergency surgery.  What I found amazing is the peace in my heart and the calm spirit of God that surrounded me even in the worst moments.  There was not a day that hope and joy left me.  This morning I awoke with these words in my heart.  I have been so blessed with beautiful, wonderful nurses each step of this journey.  God gave me the strength each morning to put one foot in front of the other.  Today I will go home.  A wonderful friend will take me there.

My life is full of blessings beyond imagination; because, God has revealed to me over the years that He is my hope, my joy, and my greatest treasure.  With Him at my side I have nothing to fear or to worry as I walk this journey upon this earth.  If you are weary along your journey of life; I pray this song will lift your heart today.

TODAY’S POEM

With Joy and Hope

By Effie Darlene Barba

I felt the warmth of love and Grace

Your breath of life upon my face

As I awoke this bright new day

With joy and hope I bow to pray

To sing a song of love to You

For all that You have brought me through

My life so filled with wondrous things

My spirit soars on gilded wings

For You my God, my dearest Friend

Have been my strength to now ascend

Each mountain peak that I have faced

Through pathways treacherous sometimes laced

With slippery slopes that bid my feet

To fall below in tears, defeat

Yet on those roads of dark despair

Your gentle voice was always there

You gave me hope to then believe

Your promises I would receive

You drew me closer to your side

Where in thy grace I did abide!

Some would look upon my life

And wonder with the trials, strife

What is my source of happiness?

And why my heart is filled with bliss

Then I can tell them of Your Grace

And How to seek Your lovely Face

If they Accept Your Gift, Your Son

Their Victory You have already won

I felt the warmth of love and Grace

Your breath of life upon my face

As I awoke this bright new day

With joy and hope I bow to pray

ZEPHANIAH 3:17

The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

How to See Trials as Stepping Stones to Glory

Four key truths I  learned over the years taught me how to face trials with Calm Assurance and Hope.   It took years to embed these truths in my heart and then to apply these truths. A lifetime of facing trials ultimately lead me to trust God in everything.  Because of trials, I learned that my life is centered in Christ. Therefore, trials are merely stepping stones to Glory. Trials are not my final destiny.  My life and destiny are centered in Jesus Christ who sits upon His throne in Heaven.  Nothing on this earth can compare to the joy I have knowing Him as my Savior, my High Priest and my Friend.

A TEST OF FAITH

When I went to work on Tuesday, I knew it was only a matter of time until I would have to go to ER.  The severe abdominal pain was a sign that something was wrong.  For many years, some degree of abdominal pain was a way of life for me.  Over the past few months I had noted  an  increase in frequency and intensity of pain.   I had wondered if cancer had invaded my chronically ill pancreas or whether scar tissue was entrapping the bowel.  Either way, for me I knew nothing would change the course until it declares itself fully.   So, it was as I headed to work, my mind quickly thought of the possible diagnosis. Then I went back to thinking of all the things I needed to do at work. Continue reading How to See Trials as Stepping Stones to Glory

What Really is Your Core Motivation of Life

It is essential to understand what your core motivation of life is!  That is key to finding joy and success.  That core motivation drives everything else you do in life whether you recognize it or not.  Many would say, “Easy, I am motivated to succeed!” Because often, we think that is it; we forget to ask then, “What is success?”  Is success dependent on money, prestige, or fame?  If so, how much money, prestige or fame is needed to be a success?  Is success being “well liked” by others or looked up to?  What about in the Christian world!  What does a successful Christian’s life look like?

HOW DO IDEOLOGIES CHANGE MOTIVATION?

Paul the Apostle in addressing the church of Colossae wrote them to beware of false ideologies which were creeping into their church.  Both ideologies go back to the core motivation of worship and how that should look like. One such ideology was that salvation was by grace plus works.  The second ideology included the worship of angels.  Both ideologies change the core motivation of serving God from that of love to that of pride.

Outwardly the service may initially appear the same; but, in the depths of the heart this changes. Because the core motivation for serving God changes, the ideas regarding success also changes.  Hence, pride replaces love, self-exaltation replaces humility, guilt replaces hope, and anger replaces joy.  This can lead to an ever-spiraling downward sense of being a failure or an up/down rollercoaster ride of life in which you are constantly striving for and never reaching a sense of peace with God. Tomorrow’s Vision Begins with Me Today

IT BEGINS WITH ME

By Effie Darlene Barba

With all the pain across this land

What can I do to take a stand?

For hope, for joy and virtue too

Oh Lord, to take my stand for You!

There is no hope for truth to reign

While men do use Your name in vain

Their selfish lies Your gospel feign

Our streets now filled with bloody stain

My Lord, I come with heavy heart

To ask You Lord, “What is my part?”

“What can I do? Where do I start?”

I have no strength lest You impart!

For if I speak, they will not hear

Angry, embittered, deafened ear

With hearts of rage and hearts of fear

Until truth and love all disappear

Such bitter rain of dark dismay

“What can I do? What can I say?”

Except on bended knee to pray

To plead You come to heal today

You are the ONLY Hope I know

Where virtue, truth doth overflow

I plead for them, that You might show

Your mercy, Lord to men so low

And let Your victory on the cross

Cover our shame, our bitter loss

Open our ears to hear Your voice

Let peace and love now be our choice

Turn evil hearts that they might see

Their only hope of victory

Is to bow on bended knee

Pleading for Grace, humility

I cannot see my brother’s pain

While anger, fear within me reign

So, first I come before You now

Clean my heart, Your truth avow

It all must now BEGIN with Me

So, open now my heart to see

My selfish heart, my guilty stains

Let truth and mercy fill my veins

That I might boldly go proclaim

That if each one would call Your Name

And lay aside their selfish pride

Your peace and love could then abide

Our freedom, liberty renew

Our torch of hope for all to view

And so Dear Lord, I clearly see

Revival now, begins with me.

ephesians 4:1-3

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

IT BEGINS WITH ME

It begins with me surrendering my heart fully to God.  Only then can I begin to display a heart of unconditional love, give with unselfish desire, and listen to every broken, bleeding heart.  Not in an attempt to tell them what they might believe; but, rather to display so much of God’s light, love, and Joy that others are drawn to Him.
