Does the text in Romans 8:28 mean that Every Thing that happens in the life of a believer is actually Certified as Good by God Himself? Everything? If we stop to remember that God is Sovereign over the affairs of mankind. Then we know He can prevent things from happening. All that happens in our lives is either within the absolute will or the permissive will of God. But how can that be? What about when we sin and walk away from God? Is that part of His will in our lives? And we know that all things work together for good. The Greek word used here is συνεργεῖ (synergei) from which we get the word synergy. In a synergistic manner by God, all the things are transformed into being for our good.
And what about Paul writing we know. Do I really know if this concept of everything in my life being good is absolutely true? But this is very affirmative: And We Know. We Know the earth is groaning as he wrote in verse 22. Or we know not what to pray for. So the Holy Spirit intervenes for us as he wrote just before in verse 26. This is a definite knowing. After all did not Paul himself experience this during his entire ministry. And how true this would become later on. He longed to go to Rome. But this would be accomplished due to his being imprisoned in Rome years later. We have many examples in scripture. Look at this one from the book of Daniel. Where King Nebuchadnezzar declared the truth that God is in total control of the events in our lives.
How Could Daniel’s Captivity be Actually Certified as Good?
Remember the story of Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian King? Daniel had been taken captive into Babylonian, made a Eunuch, and placed to serve the King. There Daniel and his three friends remained faithful to God, regardless of the circumstances or potential consequences to them. But as God “synergistically” took all the circumstances together, miraculous things continued to occur. Daniel was raised to a place of honor in the King’s Court after interpreting the King’s dream. The dream laid out the future of the nations. Then, Daniel had to tell the King of another dream’s interpretation. In that one the King would lose his mind for a time due to his pride. But this time we see God move in the heart of the King.
And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured Him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase. Daniel 4: 34-37 KJV
Not only was Daniel blessed with such magnificent prophecies; but King Nebuchadnezzar was saved. Daniel lived to see King Cyrus take reign to release the Israelite’s to return to their land.
Every Thing Actually Certified as Good for Those Who Love God But Who are they?
The Greek word used here for love is ἀγαπῶσιν (agapōsin). According to Strong’s Greek Concordance means: To love, wish well to, take pleasure in, long for; denotes the love of reason, esteem.
If we look at Psalm 128 as to whom are the blessed of the Lord.
Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways. Psalm 128:1 NKJV
What does fear have to do with our loving God?
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death. Proverbs 14:27
Here we are not talking about frightened of Him per say but rather in absolute awe of Him. Remember how Isaiah fell before Him, or the absolute awesome trembling response at Mount Sinai. There was the response of Habakkuk to hearing God’s voice:
“When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops.” Habakkuk 3:16 KJV
Yet that led to Habakkuk finding peace and joy in God alone as we read the next verse.
“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Habakkuk 3:17 (KJV).
So, Do Those Who Fear God, Love God? What does that mean?
While I was in Nashville at the Sing Conference, I heard Michael Reeves speaking about the fear of the Lord. Then this week I heard the most amazing message which I hope all of you will watch:
Please watch on youtube.
He points out the truth that as John looked in to heaven in Revelation 15, he wrote:
And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. Revelation 15:2-4 KJV
In heaven, there is a fearful trembling, joyous trembling at His majesty and power. And this will also be the case throughout the millennium. It will be an overwhelming joyous trembling beyond any joy we could ever have imagined. When we see Him fully in all His Glory. We can not even imagine the Awe, Joy and Wonder we shall feel.
Then We will Fully Understand
Every Thing Actually is Certified as Good for Those who Love the Lord. For those who tremble at His Majesty. Isaiah wrote of the Millennium
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. Isaiah 11:1-10 KJV
As God in human flesh, Jesus had full understanding of the joyous, awe-inspiring fear of the Lord. This is recognizing the awesome power of God and the magnitude of His grace. Knowing this causes us to see everything happening in our lives differently. We see Every Thing as a glorious picture of such magnificent beauty we fall before His Holiness. Then we truly realize the magnitude of grace required of God to have chosen me to be His child. Betrothed to His Son. How could that be! And then knowing His Sovereign Power, His extraordinary Love, and His Grace. How could I question what He does in my life?
A Fearful Joy confirming Every Thing Actually Certified as Good
For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
He also is to be feared above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the Lord made the heavens.
27 Splendor and majesty are before Him,
Strength and joy are in His place.
28 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come before Him;
Worship the Lord in holy attire.
30 Tremble before Him, all the earth;
Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved.
31 Let the heavens be joyful, and the earth rejoice;
And let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”
32 Let the sea roar, and everything it contains;
Let the field rejoice, and everything that is in it.
33 Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy in the presence of the Lord;
For He is coming to judge the earth.
34 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His faithfulness is everlasting.
35 Then say, “Save us, God of our salvation,
And gather us and save us from the nations,
To give thanks to Your holy name,
And glory in Your praise.”
36 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting! I Chronicles 16:25-36 NASB
Finally, the earth will be released! All that has been moaning, waiting for this moment of full freedom from the futility and sin. So, this is such an awesome trembling of a joy never so experienced by us. Is that not wondrous to imagine!!
Furthermore, who are those who Love God?
to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 c
It is His purpose that Called us. We, who could not have loved Him, had He not loved us first.
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, 2 Timothy 1:8-9 KJV
What is He working to Accomplish in Us?
If indeed because of all of this. I accept that EVERY Thing in my life is Certified for my Good by God. But what is He doing in my life?
For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. Romans 8:29-30 KJV
- He is conforming me to the image of His Son
- He is about the work of making me Glorious
How?
1. He predestined me before the creation of the world
2. He called me
3. He justified me
4. Therefore, He also glorified me (counted as complete though still in the process).
This all by the work of the Holy Spirit
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as [b]by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 NKJV
And What About My Sin? Is it Certified as Good?
My sin comes from my volition when I take my mind off of Him and focus on my desires. Yet can God who is Sovereign ultimately use that to help me transform? Of course He can! But does that sometimes require my own broken heart? Certainly. But out of the brokenness, He changes my focus back to Him. There I find His amazing joy and presence once again. That makes me less likely to desire to stray from Him. So, yes, even that is certified as good in my life. Not that it is good itself. Yet, God will use my sin to transform me to not desire to sin. Whatever it takes, He will use it to bring about good. Even though, He did not ordain my sin.
