In a world overflowing with ideas, philosophies, and religions; where can we turn for truth? We read books, listen to podcasts, play music, or have televisions playing to drown out the silence that surrounds us. Yet, even with all that, we find restlessness a part of our being. Yet, Psalm 19 and 119 tells us that nothing compares to the transforming power of the Word of God to bring peace, joy, and hope. Why? Because through reading His Word we come to know Him. The more we know of God, the more we trust Him. Afterall, as John told us.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind. 5 And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1 (NASB)
The Truth of the Word of God
In the beginning God spoke the world into being. Before this God, the triune God of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Elohim) lived in perfect harmony, love, and joy. Within creation, God placed all things that humanity might see the truth and the power of His word.
The heavens tell of the glory of God;
And their expanse declares the work of His hands.
2 Day to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge. Psalm 19 (NASB)
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. Romans 1 (NASB)
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16 (NASB)
Power of the Word of God to Transform (Psalm 19:7-14 expounded)
The Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;
Want to find strength?When your heart is downtrodden, study His law and His word. As we know His law, we see deep within our own heart those things that separate us from feeling His presence. As we continue to study, we know that He covered it all, what we could not, and cover us with His righteousness. Then we are at peace with Him.
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Even the fool can know wisdom. All we must do is read His word and ask Him for the wisdom to understand.
8 The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.
Precepts are general rules of behavior and thought. As we understand and follow these, the greater the joy we know.
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
His commandments and His spirit open our eyes to see truth amid the chaos
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
Awe and reverence of God causes us to seek Him and to desire to please Him. This guides our life.
The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. Psalm 19:10
He is the righteous judge and will make all things right. His promise of this fills all of scripture.
10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much pure gold;
Sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
Oh, how we long for Him to come, for His judgement to place all things right within our own hearts and the world. Until then, we have His word to guide and comfort us.
11 Moreover, Your servant is warned by them;
In keeping them there is great reward.
They are to guide me to the place of His great reward one day. Also, they warn me along this path. I need to know His word and hide it in my heart so that I might not sin against Him. Then, peace will overwhelm me. If I do sin though He will forgive me of those known and unknown sins, just as David prayed for.
12 Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults.
13 Also keep Your servant back from presumptuous sins;
Let them not rule over me;
Then I will be innocent,
And I will be blameless of great wrongdoing.
14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
